How many did you undo? There is one in the front (5/8" nut), one 5/8" nut on each side, above the lowest cav plate on the mid, then one 5/8" nut each side just under the cav plate on the lower unit. There sometimes is a 9/16" bolt under the zinc diode thingy as well. I always use it, but many people do not.

BTW, normally, to get the two side nuts off, it has to come down some...did it slide down at all?

The shift shaft linkage is splined like the driveshaft and will slide right off.

my bad
I thought on the 40 they use a push/pull shift rod.

You know, I could be completely way off base here. If he's talking about something other than a V6 merc. He didn't specify what it was he was working on, and I just assumed...considering this forum. ;)

yeah im talking about the 40 mariner. I removed 6 bolts, 3 on either side just below the cav. plate. Thats all there appears to be. It will come loose a bit, maybe an inch. Pman where is the gear shift linkage and how do i disconnect??? I got it in the backyard right now so I would like to get it done and put back in the garage for the night/. thanks

ok but first realize Ive never seen this engine lol
I think it should be infront or tucked just under the bottom carb
there should be a push/pull cable that runs into a lever that changes this horizontal motion 90 degrees into a vertical one.
kinda hard to eplain I realize but if it uses this system it should be fairly obviouse.
hope this helps:confused:

U got one of them POS's. You need to disconnet the shifter, it's somewhere around the swivel pin. Been awhile since I looked at one ,so I'm not positive where it's at.

can you elaborate a bit.
Why are calling it a piece of ****?

2cyl? Kinda funky looking? Anything one put gas/oil/fuel into and relies upon it to get somewhere I've found usually ends up being called a piece of ****. I bet you did it today.:)

Look for a thin rod at the front of the midsection right around the bottom swivel. You can only see about 1 inch of it. There will be two nuts on the shaft. One is about 3/4 of an inch long, the other is a standard nut. The standard nut is a jam nut. Loosen the two nuts, then unscrew the longer nut from the lower shift shaft. The lower unit should drop right off.

Pretty sure I know what your talking about. When I pull it down right? Your talking inside the case. There is a thin rod at the front going to something made out of plastic, is this it?? there is a nut there.

No, this shaft is about 5 or 6 inches above the lower unit. You can get to it with lhe lower unit still bolted in place. Look where the engine swivels at the bottom when you turn it. It is right below the lower midsection mounts. You might have to shift to reverse to see the nuts.

Waterwings, thanks for the info, got your email but my file sizes of the pics I took are all screwed up and now they are on the computer at home. You may be hearing from me in 3 weeks or so. Thanks anyway.
