View Full Version : Trying to Compare a Switch box

I have an early Mercury Mod VP engine, like 83' or 84'. Would an aftermarket switch box be better than the original one? Being the manufacturers like to brag how great their products are. How would I know what I have and what might be better being its over 30yrs old? Plus I don't know if all switch boxes are the same, or is a Mod VP switch box different, plus when trying to look one up, they don't exactly say they are for Mod VP or the HP rating of a Mod VP.
Thanks

unless ya gotta stem winder turnin' 9 ta 10 grand (even then is questionable) there's not much difference in any of 'em other than $$$... jmo

change both of 'em at tha same time... any pics of this "mod vp"?

I have loads of pics of it. I like to document things. Thought maybe I'd start a new thread with tons of useful useless photos for great comparison shots. I also have a black oval port with the same port dimensions. some say they do exist, some say they don't. I don't know because I haven't been involved in boat racing.

tha chrome hole 2.4 200 (includin' tha vertical reed 175) block (production and hi-perf) is tha same only "naked" in tha hi-perf block.. most (both) in tha 80's will have 200 stamped in tha welsh plug instead of a serial number... one of tha first hi-perf 2.4's i bought was a plain jane, naked, five petal carb motor ona "hot rod" chassis..

My plug only has a huge number 4 in it. I read somewhere they made 17 special engines. I could only dream mine was number 4 of 17. But that's why screamandfly is here. To guide us through reality.

with merc, thru tha '80's, ya jus never knew what ya might run across... i had a "laser injected" bridge port ('87) that no one seemed ta know existed, including a lotta (back then) hi-perf merc techs!

there are some 'ole heads, lots more knowledgeable than me, lurkin' around here that "might" let ya know for sure....

I bought a pair of these boxes to try out! I haven't put much time on'em yet but they are working and the spark seems to be good!
For 78 bucks WTH

Only one switch box per motor right?
