So Im having an issue with my 89 225 evinrude I'm sure some of you already know this motor by my other post but I bought the motor with a mouse nest in the cylinder so I rebuilt the motor. So ever since I got it running when I turn the key to the off position it will only shut off one side of the motor (only three cylinders) I have unplugged all of the black with yellow wires in the electrical box and checked for ground with the key off and all do except the one that goes to the shifter switch but if I push the button on the switch down I get ground. What would cause this motor to not shut off could my key switch not be working right? Oh ya one other thing when I do shut it off and it's running on three cylinders if I push that shifter button with my hand the motor shuts off right away.

Start the motor with both blk/yellows unhooked(in water or on flusher) from the packs, ground each one going to the packs and see if the pack gets killed. If not replace the pack. Pack can go bad and not kill. Remember single unit still has 2 packs in it just in 1 unit. If that is not the problem then the wiring for the kill is not wired properly. There is a diode in the system to prevent feed back. Get a wiring diagram.

Or just pull the spark plug wires to kill motor:D OUCH

it will be the shift switch wiring, since when you push the button on the shift switch it kills that bank... the power pack is ok...... I believe the diode is in the shift switch wiring on that year and if the diode poos, it will not shut off one bank when you turn the key off. You can cut open the shift switch wires to verify the diode is there, if so, replace the shift switch

Disconnect the shift switch from the circuit, and try that.
