Where would I start to look for a motor like a bp stacker on up in good running order at a non reaming but properly priced. In running order?

Too much demand Capt. you're gonna get reamed or you're gonna go without getting a motor. The days of picking up something like that for a song are gone. All the pictures and posts here about these engines has increased demand and caused a lot of guys holding on to them to assume they are more golden than they are.

But, sometimes you get lucky. If you really want a motor, post everywhere. Here, OSO, Hydroracer.net, AOMCI, CORE, John Kwast's board. The Antique Outboard Club is a good place to look, most of those guys are looking for Evinrude 4-60's or Mk20H's something one or 2 guys can lift; often the bigger motors are white elephants to them ... not only are they bigger than they are looking for, quite often they know nothing about the motor other than what is on the decals. Go to your closest AOMCI meet and talk to the guys there ... even if you don't see anything there that day ... a lot of those guys are real ferrets and can find anything and have connections with boatyards and old racers.

I can't add much to what Sam said. Every once in a while a bargain will turn up on E Bay, but the next one will be insane. I've seen real nice 1500 XS's on E Bay in the last year in the 7 - 800 range, then last month there was some morfadite' advertised as an XS with every single component gone except for a louvered cowl that brought over 3K. One thing for sure, the internet has opened the market up to a whole new pool of willing buyers.

As far as the AOMCI goes, it is the largest pool of collectors on the planet, but the absurd and strictly enforced club policy of no pricing in their ads, either printed or on the internet, has made searching there more trouble than it's worth to me. I've yet to find a buyable piece through that source, but the knowledge pool is VERY impressive.

Cap'n, one other thought: with the exception of a VERY few E Bay bargains, or at least stuff that was worth the money, most of the stuff I've found recently has been through contacts here. There are some pretty decent older items that turn up in the for sale forums, but you gotta be quick. Kim Klecker's lurking like a hungry shark for race stuff too, and he's hard to outrun to a good piece.

BP Stacker in running order:

I'm pretty sure there is no such thing in complete running order. There hardly was even back in their heyday. Finding something like that now would be a real gem and worth a mint.

You have to remember, there are some (a few, but one is enough) guys out there with $2,000,000 in their retirement portfolio to whom $5,000 is chump change. These guys are wacking the prices for the nickel and dime guys.

For example, I can't even build up a complete library of old Powerboat Magazines from the early 1970's because there are 2, not one but 2, guys watching ebay and bidding over $125.oo per issue. $1500 for 12 issues = about $5k for the ones of interest to me. Definitly out of my range when I'd even settle for photocopies or scans.

Conclusion:

I should take the two 150's I got with the wing.....make adaptor plates ....bolt them to Champ mid sections and current SSM's.....
Use some old T2x exhaust tuners I have around here someplace.

And skip the search?

Sam, if that's true, you're gonna make me go dig out my closet. We threw out a bunch of em from the 80's and 90's several years ago, but I think I've still got some older ones.

Hey Capt, what these guys say is the real deal. The internet turned me into a sort of collector, most of this stuff was before my time and I would not have learned about these without the internet.
I was suprised at what the old Powerboat mags bring, my dad has an almost complete collection from 1974 minus about 15 issues, I started looking for tose random isses on eBay-WOW! $25-35 an issue starting.

"Collectors" Was just curious. I'd like to hook a viper up with one. I guess I'll just stick to my 75 1500. Thanks.

Cap'n, if you put a BP stacker on the Viper, you'd make it worthless for anything except lookin' at and an occasional exibition pass. They're deafiningly loud (about like a top fuel car) and I doubt seriously that it'd run anywhere near the 1500 on the same boat. I don't know if your 1500 is shortshaft, but if not, I'd round up the parts and convert it and run it that way. The Viper and short 1500 is a pretty well balanced package, and maybe one of these days Bruce'll get the XS stickers done so you can make it look right.

Rich, that would be a definite short cut and much cheaper than digging up a pair of stackers. Merc only claimed 155hp on the 1250 Super BP stackers anyway, work up a pair of 150xs powerheads and you have equal power. Sticking on the VI's would give a lot of reliability. Darren wouldn't have to worry about you driving him back on one engine.

if ya'll are interested in scans of Hot Boat, let me know, I have various issues 90-95, most of 96 & 97 (will sell too for a good price :D )

( I have more somewhere in boxes........................)

Exactley what I want. Any way of putting them on my 1500?

If you could find the pieces, they don't bolt on without some adapting and I believe the inner plate is all different too. All this stuff would be fairly easy machine work for somebody competent with an end mill and a TIG machine.

T2X, if you've got old T2X exhaust tuners around there someplace, you've got the adapter plates for the powerheads too. It's all one piece.

Okay....I've got powerheads and tuners that will adapt to t-3/2x centers.......this might work.
