This entire build is insane! Unbelievable that the owner is willing to spend almost twice as much to get the 15" 400Rs and forego any/all factory warranty on the motors. That is some dedication to this build in itself! That looks like a 368, not a 36 - and with that notch at the transom, it ends up being about 34' 6" of running surface (notch looks to be about 18" long). That's going to be an awesome big water outboard cat for sure! I can't wait to see it when I'm back there next Tuesday........

Awesome build !! Finally someone bought the correct 400's for a high performance boat instead of the 400 fishing motors. This one's gonna be nice !!! Looking forward to seeing it fly !!

Razor,

If you're visiting the holy-land, please take some pics of the 36 for us and post here :)

Pete is proly concentrating on the cockpit, inside the bilge/transom areas, and the windshield receiver, pics would be great

also, approximately when she'll be blocked to make ready for paint

Don't worry Noli, I'll get plenty of pics of everything back there. Don't know that I'm going to get every angle and detail like you're asking for - pictures aren't the reason I'm going back there, but I'll get some pics of what we'll see on the water next year.

stupid question... why not just cut dwn the engine mount and glass in small splashwells vs cut down whole boat??? seems like the whole cut down is limiting its ability to sit at rest inn anything but glass water..

I think they only cut down the deck and hull sides but the boat will still have same size tunnel and depth of the sponsons.

You're correct Ron, the running surfaces and tunnel dimensions of the hull remain the same as a standard, non cut-down boat. The only purpose of cutting them down so low is to reduce weight, and aerodynamic drag. I'm personally not a fan of the ultra-low cut down boats, as you still need enough depth in the cockpit and windshield (approximately 40" from the floor to the top of the windscreen) to keep the wind going over the top of the driver/passenger. What ends up happening is the windscreen looks too tall on top of the boat - in my opinion. That's what I don't like about the look of the MTI 34X - the boat is super low profile, with a huge round windshield stuck on top of it. I feel there is a happy medium between the tall standard-deck boats and the ultra cut-down boats. Pete has also built boats with the sides of the hull canted in, which also looked strange to me (not a lot have been built with that feature). But all of that is what makes Skaters so different (and "cooler" imo) than every other boat out there - no two flat deck Skaters are exactly the same! They are truly custom built to each individual buyer's desires.

Agree with you Razor. This photo really gives you an idea of how low the sides are in comparison to the occupants.

This thing is going to be cool but I would need to have 3 for sure. Acceleration on a triple engine boat is so addictive and this hull is plenty big to still be balanced. I would love to be in a position to do a project of this caliber "its no cheap deal".

Random question: What determines the motor centerlines on the sponsons for a cat hull? Is there an industry standard dimension or just the rigging/manufacturer preference? Read a post by Linder that said the prop shaft centerline should be 3 inches in from the inside tunnel but he was using a surface drive set up in that reference. The X-cat motors all seem to vary with their set ups.

I think it really varies by manufacturer. I know that Pete likes to run the gearcases as tight as possible to the water coming through the tunnel on the 28s - 55" centerline on a 48" tunnel. He says he likes the props to grab the water coming through the tunnel, but the gearcase to be just clear so as to not create any drag. From how close to the outside of the sponsons the motors are mounted on the DW32s, it looks like Doug likes to run them farther toward the outside of the sponson. But that may just look that way because the sponsons are a lot narrower - I've never seen a picture taken from directly behind the gearcase on a DW32.

Here are pics I took of Matt Rice's new 368. From what Pete said, Grant is on a mission to make this boat very fast........ There will be another 368 being built with 400Rs soon after this one - it won't be near this cut down, more of a standard cut, flat-deck build than this purpose-built boat.

Wow, it is really cut low. Would seem OK for a race boat, not so sure it is safe for pleasure boating. One reason would be taking on water over the stern. I guess they will not try to save so much weight that they eliminate bilge pumps, another 8 lbs.

The pictures of the motors were taken at Grants place (that's Dan's 28 in the background), so my guess is that they'll hang the motors there - not at Skater. It looks to me like Skater will put the interior in it and send it off to Grants............. And thanks for posting the pics Noli! Yes, Skater will finish the windshield and interior installation, then send it off to Grant's. From what I see in the pics, I think Grant may be having his upholstery guy do all the foam and vinyl work, as the seat shells are finished, but not upholstered. He may have had Pete just build the shells and sidepanels and then finish them using his guy that did Dan's seats.

I expect this boat, as big as it is, is being built for rough water use only. I realize that Skaters are efficient designs, but 800 hp in such a large boat must take a long time to plane and really limit acceleration and top speed. Maybe 4 of them or 2 big hp I/O's, would be a better choice. These outboards are very popular now, but they can only go so far on the bigger boats.

It is beginning to seem that manufacturers are capitalizing on a trend rather than what is best for their boats.

It is beginning to seem that manufacturers are capitalizing on a trend rather than what is best for their boats.

Two things are happening in this market:
1. Guys are getting older and wiser (180 mph big power is cool but it has also proven to be deadly).
2. Inboard boats are a pain the ass even if you have the money to maintain them it still takes time and effort.

I agree that 3 400s would be really nice on this hull.

Joe

conmax

I agree with the older part. I am going from a 135 mph single engine cat to a twin 400 fishing motor one that may never see over 120. Part of this is due to reliably as well as lower noise levels.
It just seems like the bigger tunnels will be so under powered with twin 400's that the owners will soon tire of them and go back to higher powered twin big blocks. Maybe not if the lower cost and reliability are important enough. Just seems like they will miss there faster big motored I/O when one goes by them like they are standing still.

It’s a shame the EPA put pressure on the 2 strokes, a 400XS would be a killer piece and just what a lot of boats could use !!!

What a heart breaking disappointment !! The wind and waves were extremely treacherous today, so much that we elected to just load it on the trailer this morning and call it a day. Hoping everyone heals fast and the boat is repaired soon..396030396030

curious if the deck on this 36 Skater has been fixed and ready 2018 Poker Runs?

I didn't think the damage was that extensive. Looks to be the port sponson deck needed fixing, but not sure?

This is one of the prettiest boats and would love to see her back in action!

I think Matt was hurt much worse then what was down played. That along with the fact that this is no small repair job when everything got salt water submerged. The boat will most likely be completely de-rigged, new electronics, and then you have another 40K in power heads that need attention along with new windshields, and getting it put back through the paint shop again. My guess is that it will be 125K process and take a few months at best if there was no structural damage that isn't visible.
