The sides were slightly warped when I first rebuilt the motor but has gotten worse. I think the idle and mid air bleeds aren't doing the job quite right. I was thinking of just running double side cover gaskets to take up the gap. I really don't see the harm doing that on the side cover. Thoughts?
The bases warp is ever so slight and I believe is probably being pulled flat when torquing it down.

Can you see an imprint of the edges on the rubber gasket? Is the plate flat?

I believe this is caused by people over torquing the screws. The rubber gskts are soft and screws can easily compress the corners and that will cause the bowl to warp. And in some cases the body as well.

It's very faint towards the top of the side cover and you can clearly see the curve at the top where it doesn't have a screw. Yup the plates are all flat on a straight edge

Yup, someone before me cranked the screws in on the side cover. It seems to have gotten worse. The gasket isn't soft enough to quite take up the curve/bow at the top. The bowls and bottom of the carb body are fine. It just seems that if you run the double gasket it would take up the difference and not really effect the idle and mid tuning.

The bowls can be replaced for about $20 each.
What do you guys ys do to address the cracks that form in many different spots on the carbs in these motors?
I've had success using a soldering iron turned to low temp and weld the cracks shut. Then I sand the area and apply a thin coat of plastic rated slow set epoxy or regular jb weld. It's been many years and none of my repairs failed.

So you are saying the carb body where the side cover goes is warped? If so you need to replace carb body or try to surface the surface flat.

The bowls and the bottom of the carb body where the bowls mount are fine and none of mine are cracked around the screws or anywhere else

Yes Sir, I was trying to stay away from lapping/surfacing the side because I was worried it would change the air bleed tuning. That's why I was thinking of trying double side cover gaskets because getting a new or nice set of used 1st generation 60 deg. carbs with the non adjustable air bleed circuits seems to be a hard trick to pull off.

If double gskts work it may be your solution.

we here call them Tupperware carbs, they warp all by them selves. If we get a motor in for problems we will not take a bowl of if we absolutely need to,same goes for the plastic bowls on the late 80s up crossflows carbs that have never been popened up and when you take them apart they are warped.

Sanded a lot of the crossflow bowls over the years. The late 60 degree carbs like 2000 model idle the best IMO.

I'm pretty sure I got it dialed in. I even had to take the idle timing down one notch. I did the fender washer on the center screw trick along with double side cover gaskets. The 4 screw cover just looks like it was a bad idea. I'm gonna dump her in the water in a couple days.

Have pics of the fender washer installed?

Nah, but it's self explanatory

Diagnosing this one was tricky. The best I can assume is it wasn't sucking air from the edge of the side cover gasket. When I would shoot ether around the outside of the carb body it wouldn't pick up rpm like you'd think. It was leaking across the mid and the idle air channels.
