If boat forums were just like the motorcycle ones that I'm on, they would be very different.
There would be lots of ALL CAPS arguments over things like:
1. Smaller boats that go planing speed all the time are for kids and idiots. This would be posted by people with much bigger, slower boats that believe that 8 knots is plenty.
2. There is no point in carrying or wearing any safety gear because It's all a scam, and people get killed by safety gear, but "they" cover it up.
3. Wearing lifejackets promotes reckless behaviour because people think they are "safe". Not wearing one, especially if you can't swim, keeps you safer, because you don't take chances, like those idiots who operate "speedboats".
4. Why wear a lifejacket? God decides when it's "your time", and wearing one won't do a thing if it's "your time". Same goes for bilge pumps.
5. Straight through-hull exhausts save lives. Once I got my twin v-8's running open exhausts, canoes and jet ski's get out of my way, and people on shore wave at me all the time!
6. "I paid 98K for my boat, and put another 60K in chrome on it. I spend 30 hours a week cleaning it, and put 20 hours on the engine last summer!"
7. "I can't respect anyone who trailers their boat to the lake."
8. "We've done the great loop 8 times. People who just take short trips aren't real boaters."
9. "I'm more of a boater than you because my boat costs over 100K, in fact, I don't think I'll even wave back when we pass on the lake."
10. I got into boating so I could wear a leather vest and assless chaps.
11. If you have less than a 5.7, you're not a real boater.
12. If your boat is under 38 feet, see above.
13. "Nice boat. I use a bigger one than that as my dingy."
14. I've got a Bayliner. My buddies all have Bayliners. All I'd ever own is a Bayliner. I belong to the Bayliner Owners Club. I have a huge Bayliner tattoo on my back, with a big eagle, some wolves, and an otter. All my clothes have Bayliner written on them.

Boaters all wave to each other, help each other out, offer great advice, care about safety, and the safety of others. You can dock next to a much fancier boat, and nobody tends to turn their nose up at you or judge what brand of boat you have. Basically, this an excellent forum.
