I'm not sure what's expected or not, but this is annoying and possibly getting worse.
When turning the engine over, one cylinder will fire and the bendix gear drops down, but the starter keeps turning and the engine isn't necessarily running. If the motor is warm it's usually not a problem as it fires up faster than I can turn the key. If the motor is cold, sometimes it takes 4 or 5 tries before it fires up. I feel like if the bendix gear didn't drop at the first pop then it could turn over a few more times and the engine would catch.
Not a big issue and I've been just dealing with it. But now, If I unplug all the spark plug wires it will turn over until the cows come home. When I pull all the spark plugs, again it turns over continuously with no issue. As soon as I put the compression tester in one hole then again the bendix drops constantly. I have to crank the engine several times until the needle stops rising.
Is this normal for the bendix to drop down like this? Am I getting an accurate compression reading this way?
I'm using the Al Stoker 46cc heads, and I've left the reliefs open. I'm concerned my compression is too high: 140, 130, 145, 128, 135, 125.
