What is involed in replacing the bottom yoke? Have a fair amount of corrosion on mine, and would like to make things right.... Also while I am in there, are there any other recommended services / replacements?

Update: I have an image of the corrosion online at http://www.biggerhammer.net/mako/restoration/swivelassembly_bottomyoke.jpg

I would wire brush the snap ring groove and check out the splines to make sure they aren't worn to bad.

I have even put epoxy into worn splines (with grease on the new splines, "yolk", so they won't be welded together)

The hardest part is to get the snap ring back onto the steering tube, I have even had the ring keep popping back off, and run most of the summer without it........ good or bad, I don't know

Good luck!

My ring is also out (last 10 hours or so), but I honestly think there is enough loss of original material that it won't go back in (for long at least). I added an image to my original post of the problem as well...

I am guess that to replace it, you have to remove the lower, unbolt the yoke from the mid, talk the yoke into coming off, and then reverse the process. As I look at the images, I think I also need to take a close look at my steering arm.

If you (after you remove it the first time) put the lower bolts in so they come out forward (with the nuts at the rear) (you will probably also have to slot the covers so you can put a wrench to hold the nuts) Am I rambling?

I do mine that way, and the next time you can do it with out having to take the mid off.

I think Merc puts the bolts in the way they do so they wont come out it the nuts back off

Guy's this is post i have been looking for. Is it BS that you have to left powerhead to replace the yoke. 82 150 Merc. That stainless ring is just laying there. I put some rust preventive on i last season . Looks like yoke made of cast . Any idea's Thanks

Some of the internal components at the bottom of my yolk (200 efi) were worn. The rubber o-ring and nylon insert were missing and the snap ring was loose. I ordered new pieces and then applied upward pressure from the bottom of the yolk with a jack and block of wood. this gave me enough clearance to install the new parts and new ring into the groove at the bottom of the steering shaft to make for a tight fit. I might add that the powerhead was off the motor for rebuilding when I did it. don't know if that's a requirement for the work. Replacing the worn parts and new snap ring really tightened everything up.

Replacing a sloppy yoke with a new one will really tighten up the steering slop. That snap ring is really a SOB its more like a round springy wire!
I reversed my bolts also; it makes more sense.

I use a socket (maybe 1 1/4") can't remember the size for sure but you need one that will just fit over the splines on the shaft, then just set ring in place with socket and then give it a thump with a hammer and the ring is in place without a big fight.
Hope this helps,
