New Outboards - Price Clarity... What's the big secrets for ?!?!?!

So I've noticed in the last few years, it's very difficult to get a price for a new outboard, unless you're at bass-pro shop haha.

Automobiles list their suggested retail value, so do powersport manufacturers (quads, dirtbikes, jet skiis)... And obviously you get it cheaper at the dealership.
Why don't outboard manufacturers have any price clarity?!?!?!

Seems like a scam everytime I have to enter my information just to get a dealer quote - They adding installation, hookups, etc etc etc extra warranties ? ? ?

I've searched the Internet for the lowest retail price on new Mercury outboards for both 2 stroke and 4 strokes

Jaco's Marine proves to be the lowest every time. From there, you can also price the extended warranties

I was told that they would only deliver the motors to Mercury dealers and not to your home.

Jaco's wants a merc dealer to install every non portable motor they sell. I guess no one but a merc dealer knows how to use a wrench.....So add 500 bucks to the price minimum....And then possibly you will have to do it over yourself to correct the mistakes the dealer made.

I've read somewhere that there are some Merc dealers who would give the motors to you when the ordered motors arrive at the Merc Dealership.

I've read that the customer would get the motors still packed in their crates, it all depends on your relationship with your dealer

Purchased my 300xs from Jaco's and was shipped to my local dealer to mount and I finished the rest. Great to have a good local dealer.

most dealers want to install the motor for warranty purposes cause mercury don't trust the average guy to do it right and go blow the motor right away and then cry warranty.

The warranty part makes sense but most dealers are half assed and don't even seal the transom cuz they're too cheap or uneducated to use 5200. Ive seen at least half the repowers from dealers come out with a little squirt of silicone , then people wonder why the transom rots out. I'm in the market for a new merc for my cc and there ain't no dealer touching my boat

seal it with 5200 and good luck ever taking it off!!

No problem taking it off what so ever. Been using 5200 for as long as I can remember. 25+ yrs. You just put it on the bolts and around the holes. Not goober the whole back of the mounting bracket.

...The bottom line is...There is no cash-n-carry on larger outboards any longer... In Mercury's, Evinrude's, Yamaha's, Suzuki's, etc., world, all the larger outboards need to be installed by a certified mechanic, as there are too many things that can happen, due to improper procedure. The warranty claims have proven to be significantly reduced this way, thus improving customer satisfaction. There are others reasons as well, such as export outboards(meant only for export) bought at greater discounts, coming back into the U.S., taking away business from local dealers & them having to warranty engines that they didn't sell, etc., etc., etc... There are quite a few more reasons, that aren't worth going into.

My company does government and commercial work, including repowers. I have dealt successfully with Central Florida Yamaha and get the engines, rigging, controls, props, etc shipped directly and great customer service during and after installation. Good pricing, good engines, good service.

Is Eve gotten away from the original topic though- forget about installs, why can't we find prices for say- brand new etecs? For curiosity if I wanted to know the difference in pricing of a 115 etec vs a 115 HO etec? Or to compare to a 90 or a 130? There's no easy way to find that out

Not like the old days when you had only two choices on a particular h.p. outboard. The manufacturers marketing strategy for the last 10 plus years, is to have the repower o/b customer, pick up the phone, and talk to the dealer sales & service department. Its intentional. Your not going to change that policy.

Agree with FUJIMO, there is nothing plug and play in the power boating business.
Even re-powers as simple as it sounds can go from easy peasy to a time pit for a dealer - the OB is the easy part. The 12V supply, fuel, boat harness and cables all factor in. Not even accounting for boat issues.
Find a dealer, call them for pricing.

The repower market is what drove Mercury to introduce the recent 150 hp 4cyl no fly by wire no supercharger basic engine. The ability to take a tired Optimax off and replace it without re-rigging the boat. BTW,its a great engine. We had a pair on a demo boat.
