View Full Version : 2003 Merc EXLPTO 90 warning horn: troubleshooting a non-existent problem?

I've got a 2003 Merc EXLPTO 90 on an 18' center console. The rig is new to me so I am going through everything verifying functionality and catching up on preventive maintenance. One of the items that initially worried me is that there is no initial warning horn when you first turn the key on as my service manual (for serial numbers 0D283222 and above (mine is 0T662560)) states there should be. I understand that the system operates by providing power to both the temp and oil level sensors and in the event of an overheat or low oil situation, the senders ground completing the circuit and sounding the alarm. Last I grounded the temp sender wire and did get an alarm, so I at least know the horn is good now. Couldn't do the same with the oil level because the tank is nearly 2/3 full.

Anyway, I was tracing wires and looking for the warning module that the manual references and couldn't find it. The parts diagrams I've looked at this morning indicates that the module was used up until s/n 0G7660299, but not after. That explains why I couldn't find it.

So, based on the lack of a warning module, here are my questions:

1. Should the system still sound a "test" alarm when I turn the key on?
2. Is it safe to assume that without the warning module (the brain), this is not a smart system and as such will sound the same constant alarm for both an overheat and low oil condition?

Thanks.

Brian

The 2002 (wife's pontooon) 115 serial 0T585244 (Basically the same Yamaha powerhead) does the horn when you turn the key on I am 99% sure. I would assume it is the same system as the 2002. PM Tux he has a 115 on his Whaler, he would know for sure.

Be sure to stay on top of making sure your thermostat is changed and working regularly and be sure and change the anodes in the head as well as the ones on the clamp and on the mid. TUX advised me to run marvel mystery oil at 200:1 in teh gas as well and man that thing purs like a kitten and runs great and sips gas. The anodes in the head are a NLA part at least on the 2002 115 and I got them from a Yamaha dealer South Eastern Marine from Butch in VA.

Sounds like you have the 4 cylinder 4-stroke. This 90 I have is the 3-cyl 2-stroke.
