I have searched all over the internet. I would like to know a step-by-step procedure for disconnecting oil injection from a mid-eighties Mercury outboard. I want to run my XR2 on 40:1 premix and I have the appropriate block-off for where the oil pump would be removed, but I've never seen a procedure for the whole job. Help?

Fairly straight forward.

1: Remove all the oil injection stuff...both tanks, pump, disconnect and remove sensor (right above pump), disconnect oil line from fuel pump, disconnect pulse line from crankcase (the one that goes to the in-boat tank).

2: Install plastic flanged dummy oil pump shaft/plug w/ O-ring.

3: You can either use a 1/16" NPT pipe plug to plug off the fuel pump oil port, or get a rubber or vinyl vacuum cap and clamp it onto the nipple on the fuel pump.

4: Either use a pipe plug to replace the pulse line fitting in the crank case or put a vacuum cap on it and clamp it.

5: Add premix fuel

6: run it

I just went through 3 pages of posts re. this procedure taking me about 45 minutes to skim it all. I didn't find any that had pictures of the removal process. I searched YouTube also to see if anyone posted a vid of the process. Nothing. Kind of like when I go to the lake to fish. Nothing. Oh well, the step-by-step above should help. Thanks.

Here is one. Sorry no pics but some part numbers

Oil Injection System Removal

The mercury oil injection system is a popular item to remove, especially given its reputation for failure, and inability to deliver reliably after 6500 rpm.
Remove oil resevoir, oil pump, mag pickup, pump drive shaft, then install plug in shaft hole. Remove oil hose off bottom of vapor seperator, plug hose, remove fitting on starboard side of the block where oil tank pressure hose is coming from, plug hole with pipe fitting either 1/8 or 1/4., Remove oil alarm box, and i think that's all. the plug for the pump shaft hole you will have to get from dealer. (12)
Mercury part number for the plastic block off plate is 43453 and the O-ring for that kit is 32509. Jay Smith Racing Engines (http://www.jaysmithracing.com/) also has a billet kit for doing this.
Finally it is recommended by several sources, that you keep the old oil pump gear on the crankshaft, as it provides crankcase volume, and if removed will cause that cylinder to be lean.

Here is another one. Go to the tech section and search "removal" lots there

Thanks. BTW, love your Cobra

Before disconnecting mine, I made up some premixed in a remote tank and ran it for a couple minutes before shutting down and removing the oil injection system. This way I was ensured to have an oil supply at my next startup.

Good advice; I can do that. I have a 3 gallon remote I take along when we are going to out for the whole day for "get home gas". It's never happened to my boat yet, but growing up as a teenager with my dad's boat we burned a LOT of gas on a good Saturday. On more than one occasion we almost burned through an entire 18 gallons of gas. In the off-season my dad installed a 24 gallon tank.

P.S.

While your removing things....don't forget to remove the black module for the spark advance/retard. It has likely ruined almost as many power heads as the mid 80's oil injection ...

There are numerous threads here for setting the timing up properly. JMO :)

So when your all done you will have removed 2 black box modules..injection and spark advance/retard...Clip the wires and they make nice paper weights...:D

Hey , I’m removing the direct oil injection on a 1998 mercury 200 efi I removed everything but the ow oil module is confusing me because after I removed it my motor went into a safe mode and it won’t allow me to rev over 2000 rpm

My engine is a 97 Mercury 150 xr. I am seeing a lot of info on removing the oil injection system, which I was about to start doing. My alarm started going off the last time I was in my Whaler and my power was limited to under 1600 rpms. I deduced that the alarm was not coming from the under hood oil tank. I followed the oil pump wiring and unplugged the blue/white wire coming from the pump to the electrical sensor (black box) and the alarm stopped sounding. My question is: why disconect the entire system along with the oil pump plug when this in essence fixes the problem (other than not having that particular alarm any longer) if I am sure that the pump is delivering oil to the engine. Maybe I am not seeing something else that could go wrong by doing this because it seems way to simple. Is there something that could go wrong by doing this that I am not seeing?
Thanks

first, tha oiler system will not limit rpms.. if they (rpm) drop ya have something amiss with either fuel delivery and/or electrical or worse.... an "ALARM SOUND" is not a problem that needs ta be fixed by disconnecting anything!.. a "false alarm sound" needs ta be chased down and FIXED if tha oiler is continued ta be used..... its that simple.. would you disconnect tha over heat alarm jus 'cause its annoying?...

I have to run the boat like this my livelyhood comes from taking this boat out. Will I destroy anything in the meantime? When I do remove the oiling system, not sure what to do where I remove the hose from the engine that goes to the 3 gallon oil tank ( I assume it is the hose that pressurizes this tank)?
