So I pulled out my Magnum tunnel with the 1350 yesterday and fired it up this Am for a check over prior to running it this weekend. Fired right up, good pee stream, idled perfectly. Oil at 40 to 1 as always. Revved it TWICE to 3000RPM and it immediately tossed the #1 rod through the block. Looks like it broke in the beam as I can still feel the rod end on the crank. This motor has run perfectly for several years at max rpm of 6200. Last time it ran perfectly before I put it away. Odd timing I guess for a rod beam to break, not even under load?

well now I got an excuse to put the 1973 1500 on the tunnel I guess. Will post pics once I get it off the boat. Your thoughts on the failure mode?

thanks

Free revving an engine puts more pulling force on a rod than when you have a load on the crankshaft. Rods don't like being pulled on, as you have found out. It was probably already fractured, just happened to let loose at that moment. At least you weren't out in the middle of the IRL or something when it went.

Sorry man, hopefully you can find a donor or save her.

Wow. That sucks Tom. I know a guy with a really nice 1350 bare block.

More info. Needles are intact, no pounding or flattening. Rod bolt is sheared off both the head and the nut. Rod cap is split in half. not a bearing failure. Rod bolt failure me thinking...... pics as soon as I can... Hung the 1500 on the magnum already....
