I just picked up a 200 Johnson gt, 1987 vintage. It idles poorly and dies, when you give it throttle out of gear the rpms go up very slowly, I was poking around and I noticed a lot of slop where the throttle linkage attaches to the timing advance mechanism...From what I understand the timing advancing helps get these engines up off of idle rpm range before the butterflies in the carbs start to open.... So my question is before I start tearing that apart is there something common that wears out in that linkage?

I'm also getting an alarm at about 5000rpm on test drive, oil is full, had good water pressure so I'm thinking fuel restriction? Where should I start looking there?

Thanks in advance, you all are always very helpful!

Rebuild the carbs and inspect every fuel and oil hose inside and out. Also if you haven't already empty the oil tank and make sure there's no water in the bottom. All the linkage should move freely and together look at the trigger for any goop from the stator making it hard to move.

Thanks for the reply. I went through the link and sync procedure and it runs great now.... at least on the hose. I did find also that the nut/adjuster at the back where the rod goes from the timing base into the throttle linkage is broken off. What exactly does that do? I cant see what it does since the rod just slides through it anyways??? Also this motor is a 1987, not an 88 as originally posted.

the broken nut is # 84 listed here: http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1987&hp=200&model=J200STLCUA&manufacturer=Johnson&section=Cylinder+%26amp%3B+Crankcase

what does that do exactly?

It holds the spring loaded assembly so that when timing reaches the stop you have travel left to open the carbs.

It holds the spring loaded assembly so that when timing reaches the stop you have travel left to open the carbs.

So if just the head of the nut appears to be broken off will it cause a problem to run it that way temporarily until I can get a new one? I just want to take it out for a test run..... thanks Racer!

As long as it hold the spring in you will be ok.
