I’ve been working on a 1970 Johnson 33hp motor andcontrols. The issue I’m having is withthe shifting into neutral. I have justtap it past neutral to get it into neutral. So if I’m in forward I need to bring it past neutral just into reveresto get it out of gear. I can’t seem tofind a happy balance with the cable adjustment and the adjustment on theshifter lever itself. Any thoughts onthis?

Are you adjusting with the engine running?

I never opened the controls them self. Is there anything in there to play with?

You should have 2 places to adjust the mechanism. One @ the controls, and the other adjustment should be in the engine where the cable hooks to your shift rod.
If those are adjusted to the best of your knowledge, then I would lean towards a worn out Cam in the lower unit.

Are we talking about the cam just under the lower cover that the rod is following on?
