View Full Version : I started painting and rigging Joe Perog's STV River Racer today
WILDMAN

Joe has been wanting me to put some graphics on his restored STV River Racer. I finally got some time to do it. He has done MANY modifications to the hull. (I'll let him post what they are) After the mods, he had the boat painted in white epoxy paint. (Not by me) We spent some time yesterday going over the graphics. I started sanding and laying them out with tape today. They will be red/black, and silver marble. I will rig the whole boat after the paint. Motor will be a 300X with a 15" mid. GONNA BE COOL!!

That things gonna be the ultimate river boat and a show piece. Cruise at 100 with the whole family and run 120+ on command, texting, steering with your knee
Which line is gonna be FLAKE?
That hull looks like it's already going 120 ..
Starting fresh like that , Joe your gonna reset the bar with that one ...

This has always been a really good running hull. Its not light (850) with the all of the extra bracing and material that was added. Dave D. told me he ran the boat at 131, Dom, Willie, and Chris were all previous owners and have had people wanting to know where this one ended up. The boat has a much bigger transom and supports for the Porta bracket that I am going to run, the side running surface supports have been run up and taped into the deck, Doug Wright added some stiffness where he thought it would be beneficial to make it more rigid, he also glassed and cored the backside of the entire rub rail due to the fact that it will most likely be under water in the rear at rest. I converted it to from a center steer to a 2 + 2 (this seat platform also ties things together and makes it more rigid as well, we got rid of the body line (windshield) area so that new paint will look smoother, the rigging tubes and stock fuel fills were removed and glassed over for a cleaner look, and the dash was beefed up, cored, and glassed flush so that we had a little more strength and room to mount stuff.
Its a stout little guy now and ready for the master to put some make up on it.

I hate Randy's build threads. Every time I read through one - then look at my boat - I feel totally inadequate. Someday I'm just going to have to get him to build something for me. Of course he's also going to have to give up some winning lottery numbers for me to afford it ...
Waiting for another awesome finished product!

The wheels are just far enough apart that when you drop the tongue down all of the way, the rear wheels are off of the ground and I can move it around in the building with one hand. That's not the norm on a tandem trailer "Quinton at Strongback is the King"--he is doing my LCB trailer next then the Skater. His stuff is 100% custom.

Well I did tell Mark I was pulling my boat out of the garage. I don't know, the problem with the boat is, if I ever took it to an event, I wouldn't really be able to shoot photos. That's really what began my habit of non-use. Well, it really started with the fact that I was almost always with Helmut in the STV, so I never had any need to bring a boat. And from there it just developed into a routine. Some people might think I set out from the outset to just rig it and never use it but I did actually use it a few times - three in total. The last time I used it was at Alva here on the river, to shoot photos of Andy Frost's STV. I can't believe how long ago that was. :(

The tape and paper that he used filled up 3 1/2 trash cans. I think he has around 45 hours in to it at this point and about two of that was spraying. A ton of time to lay out with layers of tape and he makes it look as easy as walking-needless to say "he has done it a few times before".

Its a true parallelogram so the setback is a consistent 11 inches. I went off of what Brent told me for set up when he ran his STV with this motor. Its far from a race boat but it should be able to keep up with most of the pack.

Boat looks awsome Joe can't wait to see it hit the water going to be a real runner.
As for the plate staying at a fixed 11 inches that is not true as you move from the porta jack from center or neutral it moves closer to the boat or setback decreases I included a fee pictures for examples and here is the link( https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/parallelogram.html) to try it yourself. But in joes cause where I'm sure it mounted at running height it should not affect it adversely.350749350750

The Porta bracket is positioned so that the neutral position is at the optimum case position in the water. Any changes in bracket position are minuscule changes in set back and when the motor is trimmed, the set back returns to the original position remains constant at the correct angle of attack to the water surface. I see a lot of posts on here about where to run the motor height on boat setups. The answer to that question also remains constant for the given prop. The optimum engine height for performance on any given boat is the height at which you can run the least amount of water pressure to keep the engine cool. Provided the Prop is capable of running on the surface. I haven't even shown pictures of the water pickup in this because it's still in the R&D stages and with the enhanced pickup this gear case should run higher than a stock sport master. Joe should gain a couple of MPH over a stock setup.
Best Regards, Dave

Charlie,
Let me know where I am at in line on the cut chop and rebuild clamp assembly. Next project is well into motion and I promise that I won't be bugging you for anymore of them in the near future-you already did the two for the skater and my Orlando clipper gets a stocker...

Reduced setback as its raised would actually be good. As you go faster you are raising the motor and with a tunnel, packing more air. You need less setback for bow lift the faster you go.

It's not a tunnel it's a mod VP. Ballance at speed is different.

Not a true tunnel but an air packer still. Im sure the bow gets more lift the faster it goes. Even a V pad bottom boats getting a lot of air pressure lift at high speeds.
I would think the amount of up/down on this setup is pretty small though and setback change is tiny.

Way to much physics for you or I to speculate on. But they are basically taking a know good setup and going from there. Time, runs, and small changes will tell. As we know no 2 boats perform the same, just as props.

Spot on Chris  The range that I will move the bracket will be less then an inch and most likely only 3/8ths or so for different props. The total travel will be around 4 and only used when at idle in shallow water. The bracket just makes it simple to dial in efficiency #s on the fly and I wanted to use Scotts product because 1. he is a great friend and 2. the mounting area is spread out much further then a typical jackplate for less stress and added strength overall.

I ran the boat for the first time this weekend at the Palatka run and it ends up being a great lake boat. It is the by far the most solid feeling STV that I have owned and a couple of other guys that have also owned multiple STVs in the past said the same thing. Thanks to Doug Wright and Rustem for all of their help on the glass work and bracing. Thanks to Scott Porta for the bracket and installing it. Thanks to Mike (Fineline Interiors) for the seats. Thanks to Randy (Wildman) for all of his paint and rigging efforts. On to the next-

You need to watch the video for more the first minute. Once the whaler is past 35 its up on the pad and rollin'. It handles so nice and doesn't lean in the turns. I would put it up against any other 15' that I have come across.

A little heavier boat goes a long way in the rough. That's one thing I miss about my infused and bagged vicious. It was 600lbs beef could stand on the dash. I never had to slow down for any chop and I have launched it off the dolphin watching boats wake like a jet ski. So high sometimes it would shut the key off on landing. Much more fun then tip toeing through the tulips on every pontoon wake.

You can drive this one when ever you want "just not in the salt, and no jet ski style launches please".

Those days are over the t3 will break in half if I try that. If beef stands on the dash his food will be stuck in it like Chinese finger trap. :D
