I am considering buying a boat out of Canada and bring it into the US. Has anybody bought a boat and brought it back recently? I'm also wondering what is involved and driving into Canada and returning as far as the border documents

Bought a new top deck,You will need a passport to enter, and exit.Pay your sales tax in Canada and be sure to KEEP your receipt. There are no other taxes due at the boarder.(Free trade agreement) It's not bad,It may or may not take some extra time at the boarder on your return.

I wonder if I'll need to pay sales tax if I have a dealer sales tax exempt number

Randy it is way easier to go your way than come from the US to here. You might get away with the tax thing, try giving Customs a call. They should be able to give you all the answers and give you a list of stuff you will need to bring it across trouble free.

Its simple u tell them when crossing border and show them the sales ad. When you come back you Dont pay sales tax at the border.

If it has a motor you need to get the sn and call mercury and get a certificate for country of origin, also needs to have the EPA sticker on it. 280, 260 has the sticker on the intake. Good luck, I know this because I've done it

If you're coming NOrth and on a trailer you need a saftey first or you won't roll through. Not sure if that applies going south.

I brought a 25 motion with twins over the border. Main thing you want to do is be the owner when crossing. If you hire it out, its way more complicated. I paid no sales tax. I did get all the paperwork ready and sent it to them via fax before I ever went through, as well as told them when to expect me. the border guard was more interested in asking how fast it was. If the boat was originally titled in the states try to get that copy as a record to prove it meets US marine stds. Same with the trailer. Any documentation that was from before stateside is well worth the effort to get. I think I was through the border in less than 15-20 minutes.

I piloted a 40 Ocean SS sport that I bought in Nova Scotia in 2012 also. Entered the states in Cape Cod. Same deal, boat was originally registered in US before being taken to Canada. Once I established that paper trail, it was a breeze. Again I was on the boat though. Owner has to be present to be the easiest process. Again it was really easy and no hassles whatsoever.

When I purchased my Cougar in 2010 and Frank Mole did the transport it wasn't too bad after having a broker handle the paper work for customs. Not sure if it's changed since then or not, or depend on which border crossing you use? There was paper work for both getting out of Canada and entering the US!

If you bring your own trailer or flat bed the trailer it's different again as far a safety goes.

So it sounds like the easiest way to do it is to have a valid US passport, fly from Miami into Canada, make sure both the boat and trailer have valid Canada titles, go to Canada DMV and buy both the trailer and boat with the Canada owner present, and keep all the paperwork from the transaction, rent a tow vehicle and then Randy drags the boat and trailer across the border into Syracuse. He then flies back home to Miami and has Frank Mole drag the whole chabang down south. Then retitle both boat in trailer in Florida and pay the sales tax.

You can do the trailer safety in Canada after you arrive. You will need that to register and license the trailer. Did this last year. You also need to show place of manufacture as Canada/US/Mexico to avoid duty

I know of a trailer that was held up for 3 weeks because of that. Never heard of the safety beeing done after the entry but I'm sure you know what you did . Sure, the country of origin and tax on sale price.

US to Canada. Last year purchased a new Liberator from Dave Adams in Texas. One invoice for boat and motor itemizing make, model and serial # of boat and motor. One invoice for trailer itemizing make, model and serial #. Note on invoices stating products manufactured in the US, this eliminated duties as part of NAFTA. Crossing the border you have to pay HST on the boat and motor. The trailer you pay GST only as the trailer needs to be registered and licensed in your province. I'm in Ontario so I then had to have the trailer go thru the safety check which i did at Canadian Tire. Take the safety certificate to Service Ontario and they register trailer, give you license and you pay the Ontario PST. The only issue I had at the border is one of the border guards had a chip on his shoulder and did a search of my truck.

I'd have to paddle a lot. New boat, no motors! If I buy it, it's gonna be BADD-ASS when I'm done with it!

Really:confused: oh ya your dollar is worth something. ;)
I know Randy started this to help make this deal as simple as possible and hope all goes well. Seems to me a Sticky would be a cool thing on cross border deals. Not a discussion but only facts and info, good or bad. Would help all doing cross border deals.
Sorry for getting off topic Randy :)

Years ago when the exchange rate was similar I purchased a new John Deere tractor in Canada, the dealer provided me with paperwork that all I had to do was drop (if memory is correct) at the Canadian customs on my way by and some additional paperwork that was dropped at the US customs on my way through back to the USA. Basically the paperwork dropped at the Canadian Customs closed the loop on their side that the tractor was being exported so the dealer didn't need to pay all the taxes. The drop at the US side allowed the government a few months later to send me a bill for the state sales tax. The tractor was easy as it was made in the USA. I purchased a Honda generator which I believe was made in Japan and I had to show the bill of sale on the return trip to the US at the customs and pay a tax as it wasn't made in the USA.

My bad. I have imported a used boat as well from the US and it was easy at the border, but I did have all my t's crossed and i's dotted.

Just bought a boat out of Canada. Wired money to Seller first. DO NOT bring cash. Need passport getting in and out of Canada. Need bill of Sale, titles/registration documents for hull and trailer. US Customs inspected boat and verified it was manufactured in the US. (Douglas Skater) No tax. Very simple. You are given US Customs documents as proof of legal border crossing. Without US customs paperwork you will not be able to get the boat titled. Do not meet the Canadian Seller in the US and try to do sale here. Big trouble.

Two keys points when coming to the Canadian border: bring a valid passport and don't bring any guns. Screwing up point #2 will probably get you arrested.

It's only a few hundred yards across the Niagara River... less than that at Grand Island. My great uncle used to tie barrels of Canadian Whiskey on a long rope with a slip knot behind a little row boat and row across at a certain period in our history...
