He barrel rolled twice. He did'nt have them come over...they came over a.s.a.p. to assist him, as there was no signs of conscienceness(movement). He was'nt talking fine, he was mumbling. He was not alert & was disoriented & semilucent. In other words...he got the s h i t knocked out of him.

I found it to always be a violent event. The only difference was that in a tunnel boat you had that moment when you knew " this is going to hurt". Usually in flats and V- bottoms you just found yourself in the water wondering what happened.

Hey Jim----I don't think Johnny was ever badly hurt in a raceboat either---but I talked to him today and he is finally home, still in therapy, able to get around in a wheelchair--and promises to be in Tavares in November!!!

I remember seeing the trees on the shoreline ahead of me and then the tops of the trees and then the blue sky and then I closed my eyes real tight cause I knew this wasn't going to end well. When it went upside down I fell out like a turd. I broke 3 ribs and has several stitches to my mouth. This is the aftermath.

When i got my CT15 i found that the dash had been cut out and the windshield moved forward.
You sit with your legs straight out in front of you.
I found a mercury asset tag nailed to the hull
I was told a racer from New Jersey named Billy Martin bought it from lake X
I was talking to Jim Hunt about the boat because he had raced one.
He said that in stock form the cockpit was small and your legs were in the sponsons under the dash.
He said usually in a flip it would break both legs.
He thought that mine was altered to help this problem or the fact that Billy was a big guy
Well im here to tell you it works.
As Barry said you see sky hear the motor over rev and start swimming.
With the dash missing it just shot me out with some scratches and brused ribs.
I heard it said i should have known better the last time i hit the trim button it picked up 5 MPH
I dont run it as hard into the wind anymore.
Dale

Glad I sold my Mirage and Cougar and went high deadrise V's and wife's pontoon. I'm way to old and heavy to blow one off.

There are 50+ MPH gusts going between the steep mountains here today on the lake. I was just out in wife's pontoon after replacing the anodes in the head. It has a Lowrance GPS it came with (it is a 2002 model). I would be going down the lake at 30+MPH in the thing, round a turn after being blanked out of wind by a ridge and hit headwinds that slowed me to 8-12MPH GPS at 6K RPM, that is how hard it is blowing. I never touched the throttle I had to go buy some 3/8 Fuel line from a marina about 5 miles down the lake.

I would hate to come around the bend at 85+ in the Mirage or Cougar and hit headwinds like that all trimmed out and flying.

Yep that's me, thought it was going to end bad as the embankment was coming up too too fast, that was the reason for throttle off which just sent me over, as I hadn't tirmmed down fast enough for the corner. In the last pic people watching from the embankment342243342242342244342245342241

Gene...You are a man of many hidden talents...!! I knew that you piloted planes and race more power boats than I can remember, but did not know that you raced cars as well. I guess I should ask you if there is anything that you haven't done? How long and during what period of time did you find time to race cars.

I went down to Florida City a few times with another friend who built motors for one of Gene's competitors. Gene did pretty well as I recall. 3/4 Midget cars mostly Crosley powered. My friend built 44ci merc conversions for a guy named Earl Hatch.
Spectator safety was pretty slim back then also.

Man what a great thread. Those videos are so freakin cook. That's the era me and mitch grew up in. Back yard raceing at the Jacksonville outboard club. Remember what had to be Billy Joels first race boat. It was one of Ken Olson's boats. Kens was 1010 and I believe Billy's was 1001. I have an old vhs tape that ken did down at palatka at the azlea festival. Ol Jim Hunt (ol gator) put it on then with a white tunnel with a white mota on the back. It was awesome to be the cd sons back then.thanks for the memories

Flipping the burger... I have found some old pictures of one of my old friends from 1973/1974 called the flying greengrocer learning how to drive a racing boat the hardway. He was called Jeff Edwards he was from Liverpool and born around the same time as the beatles.I was teamed up with Jeff as guest driver for the privately owned racing team for all the marathon races. This team had a brand new 17ft Johnson powered raceboat in 1973 and its first race was at the 1973 Paris 6hr international event which was a rough old race.I had the first drive fuel load would last nearly 2hrs before a driver change the outfit drove ok for the 1st hour until the fuel load got lighter after that this boat seamed to float occasionally and got steadily worse as the fuel load got less.I decided the time was ready for a pit stop and came in to refuel told Jeff how the boat drove and to try and keep it on the water. So off he went and I enjoyed watching this race with around 80 boats running from all around the world and suddenly no Jeff the boat was no longer running i looked at my watch he had been driving for just over 1 hr and his race was over. The wreck was towed in and he was in a Paris hospital for the next week with kidney damage. The boat was repaired for the 1974 seasons racing and off Jeff went again i believe he flew this same outfit 2 more times and i have found some pictures of this taking place at Fairford in the UK.In one of the shots he has Bob Spalding driving a white JPS Molinari on the inside and Peter Thorneywork on the outside driving a Embassy Cougar.363668363669363670363671363672
