It's for a current 2015 motor. He thinks he can do it with just a cam and a reflash of the ECU. I told him that adding 25hp is more than 30% and that's a lot for just a cam and flash... There might be other differences like bigger heads or more open intake manifold. Not to mention smaller stuff like stiffer valve springs to go with higher lift or steeper ramp rate cams.

Anyhow, I told him that it would be best to talk with an a pro who knows mercs, and i know there are plenty of guys here who know this stuff. who can/should i send him to?

Would be interesting to know the differences between the 90 and 115. It may be possible that the 90 is basically a detuned 115, but I definitely don't know that for sure. I'm some sure somebody here would know for sure.

Nice Viper, by the way!

Thanks for the compliment on the Viper. It's the only one I for sure know of in Southern Cal/Southern Nevada.

Anyhow, as for the question in the thread, I'm pretty sure the 90 is a detuned 115. But the guy who's asking is not super knowledgeable/capable and I think what he really needs is one of our expert vendors/sponsors who can work with him on converting his motor. IOW, he is a potential customer, looking for a shop. It's just that I don't know who to steer him to.

Of course out of curiosity, I'd love to read any informed commentary on the matter.

Isn't that a EPA regulated motor and any mod. would be illegal? Just asking! Especially in Ca.

an EPA motor is not required in most CA waters, at least those big enough to go fast in, and it is not required in the ocean at all. the motor in question is the kind that get two horsepowers out of the same basic motor, 90 and 115hp. the dude wants to convert his 90 to a 115... using factory EPA parts. but you do bring up an interesting question... is it illegal to alter an EPA outboard even if the motor is not to be used in an area that requires an EPA rating? such as the ocean?

Best way to convert a 90 to a 115 is by trading it in on a 115 hp.

That was the first thing I told him. But he still seems pretty determined. :shrugs:

4 Different Camshafts available. 115 and smaller. Sea Pro and standard
Lots of different ECU's
Different gear ratio

I Back up the idea of trading up to a 115.

Sorry, my mistake of the gear ratios
The different ratio is when you go to the Command Thrust gearbox
