I know at least one 15 whaler that went from fl to bahamas. Grabbed a soda and fuel turned around and went back to FL.

14'3" Glastron Jetflite, 65 HP red stripe Merc. Used to go to Bimini from Miami back in '69, when I was 10' tall & bulletproof. About 45 miles, took just under an hour. Did the trip one day, while in Bimini I saw a squall coming on the horizon. Hauled butt for home, had prolly a 10 mile head start on the storm. Boat would run low 50's & I had it hammered. That storm ran me down about 2 miles off Miami, 10'-12' seas in a 14 footer, scared the crap outta me. Getting in through Haulover Cut was pretty much terrifying, that ended my long distance ocean running in that boat!!

I don't know if this counts, but I am regularly 12 miles out on Lake Erie.

I've had my '87 Glasstream 15V / '86 InLine out Palm Beach and Jupiter Inlets. Went out to the Gulfstream, about 3 miles. Calm day. Haven't tried St. Augustine.

I have been out in Lake Erie in small boats throughout my life (I grew up in Buffalo), being out there when bad weather sneaks up on you is no joke. My uncle sank his 16' tri hull one day out diving. But when I was young and dumb, small craft advisory meant get the Sea Doo out and see how high you can jump....

I also did the Shredd and Reagan radio show charity run from Buffalo to Cleveland. 12+ hrs on a Sea Doo across Lake Erie arriving well after dark with no lights!!! My buddy drove my truck and trailer there and when we went to the after party on the flats, I couldn't even stand. LOL!! Good times!

Grew up in South La. When I was a kid with my dad we would run out miles in our little aluminum rigs when it was calm. No way I would do that now by myself. Especially not with kids!

...Bakers Haulover is No Joke most anytime. Single engine V-6 boat at half throttle and standing still under the bridge. Stuffed large offshores multiple times there...

13' whaler w/a 50 hp merc in about 1972. Went from Ft Pierce to Bahamas and back several days later. Followed some big boats over and back for safety. Those were the days when nothing seemed to be a big deal.

NICE PAIR

I was out off of the De coast about 12 miles(B bouy) boat was a high sided cruiser and we saw 3 heads bobbing about 3/4 mile away we instantly ran to see if we could help. Get there it was the Pa Navy summer tourists in a maybe 12 foot john boat 3 with coolers and 9 1/2 johnson. The inlet they had to get out is one of the worst on the East Coast. To be young again:cool:
