The more I look at your paint job Randy the more I love it. Very cool. At first it seemed complicated but it fits the boat to a T. That is going to be the most bad ass Screaming Eagle Talon 22 every put on the water. Man I wish I was rich, I would have already given you a deposit! I gotta make some money and get an XL from Todd and get you to put the engine and drive out of my Cougar in one of those. I really like the Cougar, but I LOVE the lines of the Talon and I think your paint job really accents it's shape. You are amazing dude!!!

I hope some folks who know little to nothing about what it takes to design, prep, paint and then rig a hull are watching this thread. Not only is Randy showing how it’s done, he’s also showing how long it takes to actually do it. And if anybody’s noticed, it takes a lot of time.
Oh, and just in case anybody’s wondering why high quality paint and rigging work costs a small fortune, your answer is also in this thread.
Nice work Randy! I stand in awe.

Paint and tape were $1540. Those little skinny rolls of 3M Fineline masking tape are about $18 each, and I use ALOT of them. Most people just have no idea. After it's painted, it will take about 2 1/2 days to sand and buff out so that you can't feel all the graphics. I did add another red candy metalflake stripe today to the transom to separate the silver and black. The boat is all taped and ready to clearcoat on Monday!

Yea a ****ty job would take about half the time and always be ****ty, you would have to look at it as long as you own the boat..
Randy's work is SPOT ON neat and clean and great and when you get a boat from him it will always look the same, flawless and well thought out. I wish I had the cash to buy this Talon. I have been in Todd's shop and watched he and his guys making them, I would trade my Cougar + cash if I had it in an instant for this boat!

Normally, you need to clear over the basecoat within 20 minutes for good adhesion. Obviously, I can't do that. I spray House of Kolor "Intercoat Clear" over each color graphic. That way I can wetsand after the graphics are done without hurting the candy or pearl effects. I wetsand the whole boat with 400 grit just before I'm ready to clear. Then I go over it with a Scotch brite pad and soapy water and rinse immediately. I NEVER wipe anything down with wax and grease remover before paint. That just seems to cause more problems than it helps. I will also put on a coat of "BULLDOG" adhesion promoter just for extra adhesion. I use PPG paints and PPG Concept clear ($478 for a gallon kit) For my pearls, marble, and candy, I use House of Kolor paints.

Very nice products no doubt!
i used Matrix Systems to paint my stv, and to get the colors all on and clear in time was almost impossible, in the end I was not happy with the final job, swore I would leave the painting for the pros in the future.
doing all these graphics, marbles, multi colors, pearls, metal flakes, plus the capping the rear, is truly a lot of hard work, I would say the paint and mods on this hull alone, is almost equal to the hull cost it's self.
on my XL build I may look to you shoot it, a simple scheme, solid silver I believe, I'm liking the silver metal flake, if it works out that way,

For what it's worth and it's only my opinion... What the crap does it matter the font used? We have a new boat manufacturer and builder/rigger... I don't care if this is their first attempt of 1000th it is turning out great and the logo looks more "modern"!! I could even see taking it further... I recant my earlier statement about the scallops being out dated. The layout is well exicuted. I can't wait to see the finished product!!

Alot of boat makers change their logos over the years. Cougar boats in Canada had 4 versions while in Canada. When sold the new US owners was revised again. BAJA had a few as did others.

Damn! You had to mention the hatch. We are making a new hatch with 1/4 tighter all the way around and we are removing the vents. We had to make inserts to go into the mold to narrow the hatch up and after it cures for a few more days we will pull it out and cut out the vents and flatten that area. We will be making a new mold without the vents so customer's will have the option of the old style or the new style.

Randy, get your hands on some of the sandpaper, polishes and dust free sanding systems made by the company I work for, Mirka Abrasives. We have some products that will save you time and effort and money.
I handle Tesla Motors and they only use our products. The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing company has been trying to get the business since day one. They cant compete.

Randy,
I do a reasonable amount of detailing (all automotive) and loved - but stopped using - Meguiar's M105 a while back. They have a newer product called M101 Foam Cut Compound that cures the biggest problem with M105 - the dusting. You might want to try it. I haven't used my M105 since going to M101.
Another work of art! Just a suggestion. Not sure if you mentioned what the trailers you were going to us for these Talons but I know Talon used Owens & Sons Slide-On aluminum, single axle, for this hull. That's what mine came with and the bunks were set up perfect. It was an easy boat to launch and retrieve alone.
Looking forward to the rigging!

So what would be everybody's dream power on a new 22?
Mr. Higgs has an original twin 22 with 200XS's. Sweet running boat, incredible acceleration, and it just sips fuel. Runs out of speed at 100 MPH, but it was a turn key great boat. Tough to beat that, unless you wanna deal with 280's and now you have a 120+ MPH rocket on your hands.
MDS
WILDMAN
02-23-2016, 04:06 PM
The 280's and 225 Promaxes were discontinued in 2005. It would be hard to sell a new boat with 11+ year old motors. New 200xs motors cost more than a 300xs and have no warrantee.
mikesufka
02-23-2016, 04:19 PM
To answer the above question ................ single 300XS
panther150
02-23-2016, 04:43 PM
there was a 22 talon with twin 15" promax's up in Ontario Canada a few years ago it accelerated like crazy, but given all the currents facts I think the single 300xs is the motor to go with. if you want more speed, DBR or Simonize it.
would a VROD be to much weight?

WILDMAN
02-23-2016, 10:24 PM
Yes there is a black border around all the red. The console is painted completely black except where you see taped. If you look at post 337 you can see how much is black. Also the half circle around the steering hub will have a three-quarter inch black border going through the red. It is hard to visualize when it's all papered and masked off

It goes without saying that these are my most anticipated posts I look forward to each day. One question I have Randy is... on installing rub rails. How do you managed to make the bends at the transom and at the front of the hulls/decks with out "kinking" the stainless or aluminum..?? A tunnel hull/pickelfork would seem to be a real challenge??? Do you strive to use just one piece or center on the very front and work your way down each side? A 20 foot hull would use in excess of 45Ft of rail... OR, are you using 8 foot sections.? Any longer and freight issues come into play? Is it a two man install? Thru-bolt, I assume? Ever use the rails that have a slit in them that incorporate the nav lights in them?? Or are those lights a self install?? Thanks for the info and the pictures. P.V.
WILDMAN
02-24-2016, 11:24 PM
I had to choose a rubrail that would bend around the sharp corners easily. I am using a 1 inch aluminum rail. It comes in 12 foot sections. All the Bends had to be made before the paint work started. If you try to bend them on the paint it will go chip it up. The back has no rubrail, that's why it is all "capped" and molded in smooth.

Randy in your opinion how difficult would it be to "Cap" the entire boat? just as you did to the rear, could you also do to the front? I know the Shoe Box type hulls its much harder to do.
Just wondering for my XL... I want the Front and Rear Capped...

Maybe but my Cougar 22 MTR is 29 foot from trailer ball to prop. My problem too. Only my heated garage is longer than 25' deep. I am limited to 21' V bottom boats in my other garages since they are only 25 feet deep. My Mirage fits well. The 21' boats are a squeeze fitting two into two 10x25 deep bays in a double garage.
If that is all you have in the garage it might make it taking up both bays but not sure. Plan on 30 feet and about 8.2+ wide for the trailer if it is anything like the Cougar.
If you have a single garage 19x19 I doubt it would fit just like Dave is saying. Very doubtful.

Yup the BAJA is 18'6 and has a short tongue on the trailer, with a 225PM and 4" jack plate 24' works. The Cougar with 8" setback a BP is 2' longer.

Grand Haven Michigan but we were either up in Cadillac or in the upper peninsula every weekend that there was snow. I still go out to Togwotee WY. once a year to get my fix. I moved down here in 06' and had just built a turbo RX1 with Jeff Simmons (it was a weapon)-before that we were running cats with Hooper motors and Polaris stuff from Rob Shouping at HTG. New trail sleds every year was part of the season change and we went to Haydays and did the MSDRA races every year which only turned up the fall fever. The ice bikes and drag sleds were also a big part of my world. The weather inconsistency was part of reason I chose to make the move and I have no regrets.

I really like your trunk liner, good idea. Carpet in those areas looks fine and all, but if it gets wet ya gotta leave it dry out and hope for no mildew.
I'm curious about the Awgrip. I know you use it a lot, how is it to work with as far as clean up, etc? Do you spray it or roll/brush it?

I roll and brush the Awlgrip. You need to use the "brush" catalyst though. One coat usually covers but I used red once and it took 3 coats. I have sprayed it on motors and gearcases and it comes out well if you know how to spray. I sprayed it once in a rear area and what a mess! It is too close cornered to spray without running, doesn't cover as well, and the overspray sticks to everything! You better make sure you have the boat covered airtight! I've been using the trunk liner material for years on the ceilings under the dash and I first used it on the sides of the 30 Liberator. It gives a very clean look without adding a lot of weight.

Manual Jack Plate? Is it to save weight? Did you color match it or powder coat?

I never use a hydraulic plate on a cat. There is no need for it unless you want to water ski or tube. It is powdercoated red.

Looks really good. It looks like the jackplate has Allen head cap bolts instead of hex head bolts? is that how they come from Hydro Dynamics now or did you change for looks.

Randy, love your rigging. It is a work of art. I want another and bigger boat. Your build posts are the best form of salesmanship I've ever seen.

You can't run a single engine true cat without one-

Actually that is true. My 21 liberators have a center pod so I don't need a hydraulic jack plate but true cats like skaters do need them.

Randy which truck bed liner material are you liking? Ive used the rattle can stuff exposed to salt water with great results. Did the transom plate on my Fountain, a jackplate, and brand new axles on my trailer. The kits look like better quality though.

The trunk liner is a soft fabric not a spray on. Kind of like the fabric you see on speaker enclosures but thicker

I have the dash and motor all wired now. I hung the motor yesterday and decided that the custom Jackplate had too much "tuck" under. I wasn't sure that it would trim high enough with a standard motor. I already had the motor all rigged up before I decided to change out the jackplate. I also made a fiberglass subwoofer box. I glassed it to the backside of the front bulkhead. It sounds so much better when the sub is in an enclosure. I also got all the power steering hooked up. Here's a pic of the pump.

I finally the the boat all wired up except for the stereo system. Power steering is all in and bled. I put in the gas tank and electric hatch lift today. The underside of the hatch is covered with trunk liner. There will be an upholstered sundeck on top. I'll work on getting the interior installed and fire up the motor this week. The only thing I'm waiting on is the rub rail

Randy, what type of product did you use to attach the trunk liner material to the hatch?
