I have been a lurker here for quite a while...I never really post. But I am trying to figure out if I am making a big mistake or not so here goes.
I bought a 1989 Monza 23' center console a while back with the original 1989 black max 175 on it, boat runs perfect no problems at all except it looses fuel prime when you shut it down, but that shouldnt be much to fix....I originally bought it to do some offshore fishing and just to run the rivers on. If you dont know about the Monza 23 it was a small company here in Florida, the boat is almost identical to the donzi f23 except it has a built in setback and a small 4" pad running about 1/2 of the keel, it is a hull built more for speed than offshore fishing. I recenly bought a 23' walkaround so i no longer have a need for it offshore.
I came across a craigslist add for a 1984 mercury 3.4L 300, the engine came off a very heay 25' center console and was never turned past 4500rpm, supposedly very low hours and the engine is in great shape with good compression and very little corrosion. engine is turn key. I bought it thinking i should be able to just swap it out easily, but it has a few things different, one is a external trim (have all the pumps and lines) and also the shift cables do not seem to be routed the same, so it will cost a little to get it up and running.
My dilemna is that I know it will be impossible to find parts for this engine, but how much fun would it be to have this hull with around 260-270 hp (it is not really a 300 I know that) It is underpowered now with the 175, she will only run about 45 lightly loaded. Should i just stick the thing on a run it till it blows? It should only cost me a few hundred more to install it, so i would have less than $1500 in it total. (I already bought the engine) I want to run at least 60 and i thing this should do it easily without turning too many rpms
Am I a dumbass?
