You will have to rebuild both engines and maybe re- plate both engines @ 200 hours . Big money .

Even if the leak down and compression are ok

Tom and tux, US Chrome replates them correct? How much is it to get it done?

I called US Chrome two weeks ago as I have two I need renic'd and they Charge $840 per Block to Renic. Customer pays all shipping costs to and from. So No matter how you slice it and dice it. It can be just over $900.00 depending on location and how you ship.

Bud is correct! I would budget $1000 each hoping they are all good and no replacing necessary.

 And that's just for renic. Rings, Bearings, Gaskets, Good Rings Xtra. While they are down send the pistons to John Marles for Top pinning and If you want to go all out have the Skirts and tops coated in DFL and ceramic Thermal barrier. I coat a set of six that have already been in service for $270.00.

So with 200 hours and need to be rebuilt but running good what should they be worth

Did you do a leak down ?

Have someone with knowledge pull the heads and look it over good...

I LOVE the 260 motors , they will suck some fuel , but they are History, GOOD history for sure.

I agree,

With many of us here, I have broke, windowed, band aided and redone many a 260 and here are my thoughts.

If you are new to this...Before you jump in call Diamond, Smith or Gohr or others on here that know for some budget numbers.

Based on experience & to be safe. I'd figure $2500-$3500 each to do it right. I would ask this or get an experienced person to help you. Assuming they are all correct with good Crank & heads and the correct EFi boxes and correct Fuel Pumps & correct regulator. etc.

Not to scare you or piss off the seller. I have been there.

It may cost you this to do it right:

Renic 6 holes, you may need. 6 new top pin pistons, Good Rings, Reeds. Clean injectors, Gaskets, disassemble & reassemble. Add Crates and Shipping & shipping insurance if you sending to a builder.

(Some builders will set timing and Dyno test then ship ready to drop on. I prefer this way. It eliminates hi irritation if something goes bad on 1st fire up and you have to ship back to the builder)

if its a pair of twins with a counter rotator thats been shifted. Check the CLE's or Sportys (Small or Fat shaft). Oopsy! the lube is dark with shavings. Better go thru the gearcases. Add more $

A pair of 8000+ RPM 260's are a blast...but blamo time can catch up with you if you push them to hard

Before you send block to US Chrome for replate clean ALL the oil out of them so the nik sticks good. Use mineral spirits and/or trichloro (brake clean).

If they have cle cases they are pre 1995, so bottom guided rods, pistons will likely be shot. Old style ecu, digital came in 1995. 200 hours without a re and re means you are past due and like above need inc.
New nic, 1k
pistons 1500
bearings and gaskets 650
reeds, 200
plus labor

:iagree: that is considering everything else is good and usable like crank, rods etc!

Just curious? Did you call US Chrome in CT or Fond Du lac? Reason I ask is I personally spoke with Barry at US Chrome in Fond Du Lac two weeks ago and he told me $840.00 to renic a block. The facility in CT does not do renic and has to ship it to Fond Du Lac as that's the only facility that does Nicasil. Just wondering why the difference?

So it looks like if I was to spend 3k per motor I would have perfect motors

RBT

260's with fresh nic, new Pistons, I would mag the rods, new bearings and a good assembly with clean injectors, healthy electrics will run a long long time (100 hrs) then is should just need a light re and re (rings) and do it again, at 200 hours I would be putting Pistons in it.

So maybe sell them as they are and go with different motors?

Tom Foley
12-05-2015, 06:25 PM
260's are great engines and if you analyze how many actual hours you run per season they make great engines . If you have good setup ECU's and you rebuild them besides the NICASIL they are not unlike the regular fishing engines with respect to other electrical components and parts . I take mine on regular trips up and down rivers all the time with great reliability and exciting performance . With new engines it would take you ten years to amortize the savings . Re- build / enjoy !!

Man, these engines suck ass.

I know this won't be a popular opinion. These things are great pieces of machinery, but as an engine owner, this is a ****ing nightmare. 100 hours just seems unacceptable to me, not a reasonable tradeoff at all.
