How can you tell if you can add finger ports without any issues on an open deck block, I think 89 225 Johnson.

To add to this, Racer or anyone, are the finger ports cast into those blocks, but just blocked off by the sleeves... meaning can you swap into finger port sleeves with minimal work? Or do you need to remove the material from the block also to make the finger ports?

You have to cut the block.

Thanks Joe. Haven't spent much time with those blocks and always kinda wondered that, as well as why OMC made the bosses, but didn't use them for 5 years.

I don't know there doesn't seem to be a specific year they added the bosses. I have a 2.7 with finger port bosses another weird thing about this block is it has never been painted.

No v6 open decks had fingerports either but they had the bosses in the block. I've seen Atleast 1 v8 with fingerports bosses also.

I cut f/p's in my blocks without bosses...
Even in the blocks that has got the f/p bosses, they only cover one of the potential f/p locations, when you cut the other one, you still risk cutting into the other cyls boostport!:p

How did you measure your depth or thickness before cutting into the boost ports.

The side of the boost port is thick and a non issue for proper depth finger ports on a 2.7 or 3.0

Thank you Al. Is there a certain depth and length that they should be?

Length depends on location of the hole in the piston, it needs to line up with the piston hole at BDC and of course top with other intake ports. For most applications .500 deep.
