Wiseco, lighter stronger faster. Coated

siezeco is good if you run them loose and put some break in time on them. vertex has a better reputation from what i have read in the forums.

Actually the Vertex is lighter. 473 grams

Can't say for all application, I save near 1/4lb reciprocating weight plus crowns are coated. Yes break in is slow and deliberate.

Where are you saving weight?

FMP

Total piston weight, which is part of the reciprocating weight.Recip being piston, pin, clips, rings, rollers, and small end of the rod.
Where did you save over a pound? In may case Wiseco is significantly lighter than Vertex.

Wsm has been good for us,Chris

I have a Vertex and Wiseco piston, complete with wrist pin and rings and the Vertex is much lighter. I have never used the Wsm, Chris. What do you like about them?

What motor are you building, FMP?

A lot depends on the engine, power level and rpm.

The reason I am asking is I have always used Vertex and they are on back order at Pro Marine. I was building a motor the other day (225pm) and noticed a big difference between them. I looked on ProMarine website and the Wiseco is advertised at 1.6 lbs and Vertex at 1.5 lbs.

Good and important question!

:iagree: This will tell all for me!

For a stock 225PM or around 7000ish+/- the Vertex is an excellent choice. Been using them in plenty 225PM motors will exceptional results.
Even the ProV is a good piston. For me a steel bore motor get cast pistons.
I have never tried the WSM that Chris mentioned, just may try a set in the near future. I think the one advantage is the 1.5 rings.

i just put a set of wsm's in a 3 litre, they seem like a decent piston. never had good luck with the wiseco's(at least in the mercurys), thanks for the tip chris, the wsm seems like a nice piston. vertex are great when you can get them, pro stopped carrying them for 3 litre mercury applications. i personally would run a wsm if the vertex weren't available.

For a PM, WSM is the best choice. Top quality cast piston coated and comes with 1.5MM rings like the factory...Vertex are good but use the 2 mm ring. I have several PM w/ WSM pistons and they run great and never had one problem. WSM also offer oversized pistons for the PM with 1.5mm rings.

iv had good luck with wsm in a yamaha i built, i'v seen them last in some 2.5l a friend built, i unfortunately i didnt have the same luck in my mod vp or bridgeport,, would i have better luck with wiesco in a steel bore bridgeport motor? the other 5 stock art and 5 mahle pistons that came out lived a long time....

Bottom Guide Vertex use 1.5mm Rings. Top Guide use 2 mm..

ive used vertex for a long time with zero incidents thats ZERO im no seizzzzzzzzzco fan by a long shot but i dont do nuttin but merc v6 ive just recently heard about the wsm piston with the 1.5mm rings( thanks GO) with high silicone content im a fan already i will try some on the next cut all to hell block im beatin on yeah im aware of the 1.5mm ring deal on vertex depending on yer crank you may be in for some more machine work bott guide rods, pistons dont work so swell on top/g cranks small rod boss's

Wsm has top guide 1.5 mm ring Pistons for 2.5's...I've used lots of em,and hundreds of other Wsm Pistons, good results,Chris

Im sure your aware but for those who are not, the Top guide rods work fine with bottom guide Vertex pistons, just have to stack or use a thicker wrist pin washer. 90% of the Prostock racers run them this way with no problems. Wsm are good but do not hold up as well for us under compression. Just my experience & some other Racers that have tried them.

TC yes im also aware of the thick washers i have some around here somewhere im thinking they was on some tguide conversions on the early 260 with Mahle pistons but that was so long ago i aint tried the super wsm pistons but i do member 10 years ago or so they was ultra cheap and had no coating you could buy the whole rebuild set with bearings for under 500

Does vertex make both top and bottom guided pistons?

I ran Vertex in a 260 for literally 10 years with no issues. (2004 to 2014) Could not afford the proper piston at the time.

What about Mahle?????????
Will thy hold up to 10000RPM runs from time to time................

I have had no problems with the Vertex but they are on back order with no ETA. I might try going with the WSM but I don't like experimenting with customer motors.

I love the Vertex I have them in my 225 pm and in my highly modded steel sleeve and have turned them well over 9000 rpm and have held it at 8500 for a couple of miles.

Tom, great first hand info/feedback! Even the ProV piston have been doing quite well.
I'm sure the WSM are a good or even a great piston just chicken to try something new.....:D
