Got a friends Bridgeport to rebuild and it really needs pistons....is there a source for new Bridgeport pistons? I haven't messed with one of these in ages and couldn't find them aftermarket and Mercury is NLA. Can the stock 2.4 200 piston be modified (machined) to work and does someone on S&F do this? Thanks for the help. Mark

It appears wizzard makes a 2.4L Bridgeport piston with the flat land machined on the piston. I think you have to modify the others yourself...this is what I've been able to find, if anyone is interested.

Yes Wizzard is the only people that make a Bridgeport specific piston. Others can be modified but make sure to not use the rings for Chrome bore coating.

John Marles at US1 can cut the piston for the bridge. He did a set for me not to long ago

I have a rebuilt Bridgeport with the newer Wizard pistons in it. 23 hours, so far so good.

I may be wrong, if my memory serves me, the "cut" or millwork done on the piston is for bridge cooling.. Broken bridges were common. If you steel sleeve the block, you won't need this millwork done. You can use XR2 chrome rings on these pistons if you go with steel sleeves.

XR2? both are 2.0 motors. jus sayin'......

My apologies.. XR4 rings will work (Keystone), not XR2.

Also.. The millwork done on the piston is not as effective as Mercury originally had expected, so they drilled two very small holes (I don't remember the size) through the piston about an inch or so apart in the center of the millwork. This allowed unmetered fuel and oil to enter and pass along the entire millwork surface. This added cooling, however, did not entirely solve the broken bridge issue. I always re-sleeved every Bridgeport motor I ever owned, never ran them as factory chrome.. US Chrome (Wisconsin) did all me sleeves, they are close enough to me that I would drop the block off to them. Then up to Merten's for some performance tweaks. By the way.. I've never dyno'ed these motors after sleeving, but for some reason after sleeving I lost a bit of performance. I was told this by US Chrome, so I didn't have high expectations after sleeving these blocks.. At the end of the day, I would loose a few MPH, but, as acceleration goes and the history of the MODVP, still felt like you were being pulled down the lake by a leer jet..

Now I am confused....if it is factory Nik plated B'port it uses chrome rings. if it is cast iron sleeved, it uses chrome rings.....the chrome bore motors used unplated rings???? Or has time erased the memory? One thing for sure a 2.0 ring of any material will have a tough time working out!!
I still have an old carbed B'port. It has 3 cast sleeves and 3 factory nik cylinders. We put a 150 hp nitrous system on it back in the early 1990's. It is still a blast to run. Pulls harder than the hottest 300 Drag motor I ever owned for about 500 feet. If I remember the bridges in the nik cylinders were lightly dressed with an abrasive roll to lay them back a little and thinned down
Pistons had milled flat and gas ports. The cast cylinders didnt seem to care.

I have a big old 2.5 .030 over Z port motor laying in the corner that I have never tried to run. It needs pistons. might have to give it a whirl this year.

Dave you are correct on the ring thing, chrome bore has a specific ring to that plating alone. ;)

Anyone have the correct part number for a nik bridgeport, mahle piston, piston ring set? The rings that were sent to me are #39-816802a12. The rings I took out were gold rings. The new ones are not. Thanks

The rings we used for the block after being Nik plated were the stock chrome bore rings that were sent out and plated....looked gold after plating. I forget what the plating material was.

That is the number I have for Mahle pistons, was not aware Merc offered Gold rings for Bridgeports. Wizzard did, possible someone had a stock set coated??
Are they top pinned?

They are marked as mahle, side pinned, but are machined flat at the bridge.

That's the stock piston, like GoTime said they were coated. JMO just run the stock rings you have.

Thanks! Any advise on d-porting the pistons or drilling holes to help cool the bridge?

I have seen many configurations on Bridgeport pistons. The flat is about 1/2" wide with 2, 1/8" holes at 5/8" and 1 1/8" from the top of piston. D ported (actually square) at 7/8" wide and nearly an inch tall. Holes for fingerports from a 1/2" hole to a 1/2" slot 1 5/8" long with holes at top and bottom. Lots of different ideas were tried back then. Teflon coatings and ceramic tops applied to the pistons. My last one had dual plug Hledin heads, 6 two barrels and nitrous. They ran well.

I just played that game looking for pistons for my bridgeport. I was going to use vertex but found out I could not get them so my next options were wsm, glm and wizzard but the wizzards were not in price range and I just couldn't swallow the price for the cast piston plus the machine work. I ended up with wiseco and had the flats and holes drilled.
