Looking for a pair of mid to late 90s 225 hp OMC Johnson or Evinrude 25" counter rotating carb motors for my 31 Chris Craft Stinger 313.

Would consider other brands if they came with everything (oil tanks, keyswitch and harnesses, lines controls and cables).

Would love to go 250s but I've heard OMC 225s are better. I don't know anyone who's had the late 90s 250s, I'd be interested in opinions on them...

Much appreciated cash in hand for a clean pair from a reputable seller. I wrote 15" by mistake. Need 25"

How are the 250 Yamaha HPDI Saltwater motors. Any years with issues? I never heard a bad thing about Yamaha

The 250 OMCs are the same as the 225s except a bit more compression and exhaust port requiring you to be a bit more picky w/octane.

they didn't build many of them and fewer left.

I had a set of virgin 250s a few yes back that I sold to firkin crazy and I don't think he ever ran them and might be interested in letting them go.

that was the 2nd set I had and loved them. Best v6 OMCs ever built, IMO.

What year 250 would you look for?

I think '98 was the first yr. Before that the 250's were V-8's. Johnsons ran through early '2000's but Rudes became Fichts in I think '99.
The ones I sold Paul came w/the hr meters which said 250 and to my knowledge they haven't been started since ;)

Need to be careful too as many were blown up and the blocks were replaced w/200/225 blocks which weren't the same.

There aren't many 250s but I've owned a few they are good motors but they are plagued with the locator pins falling out. The later models had the pins in a different spot then the open decks which was supposed to keep the pin cool but didn't help. I've probebly owned/built 40 of them and The Top three killers is bad fuel, locator pins and the butterfly power packs double firing. Some also had loose upper besring carriers which cause the bearing to go away and take the crank with it. Around 98-99 they added 2 studs to the block in place of bolts to help

So sounds like I'm better of sticking with late 90s 225 carb motors right? Or maybe go Optimax 250s. Any years to watch out for on the Merc or Yamahas?

They all did that. Pins and carriers.
This wasn't specific to the 250's. None of my 250's did.

Most of the dealers didn't know they had more compression either. The one I got mine from that I sold to Paul didn't.
He lied to me about doing a compression test before I got there to pick them up. Handed me a sheet of paper that showed all twelve at 95 - 100 psi not knowing they should have been 110 - 115. Got them home and tested them and they were all 115+.
100 psi on a heavy boat w/**** gas, will normally survive. 115+ will not.

OMC did a poor job of educating the dealers on those motors.

Yea I meant they all had the pin issues. 200-250 had the same Pistons what's sad is I pulled down a 2010 3.4 250ho with 190 hours and 3 out of 6 Pistons had the pins hanging out of them. Seems they haven't fixed the issue. Ill ever run an Omc/brp piston in anything I build.

how come we never see a pin falling out of a x flow of a 2/3 cyl looper?

just imagine if OMC went down the simple front injected route like a Merc 260/280 or 300x in that 250 ( with forged pistons)?

I think the Di motors heat cycle the hell out of the piston and there's no way around jt.

Ive ve got some 3l Merc stuff sitting at the shop and thought crank case injected with Ficht throttle bodies or Etec front would be interesting with brucato PCu

MercenRude?

So finding a solid used 250 and then dropping some aftermarket slugs into it would be a safe plan?

What is the difference on the 200/225 blocks and can this be spotted on the outside or do you need to see inside the cyl's. Thanks.
