Is it possible to pull the rod cap off without cracking the motor apart?

You may think it is crazy, when my mechanic buddy told me how he did it, I thought he was nuts, until I cooked a piston in my Vertical Reed engine. then I looked hard at it and decided he was right. Line up the rod cap carefully and drill a 1/2 " hole over the rod bolt. Put a rag in to catch the aluminum chips. Put socket in thru hole, remove rod cap, remove rod, repair, and then put it back together, and repair the hole with plumbers stick epoxy. Saves a lot of hours. The hole repair holds very little pressure.

People seem to never have time to do it right the first time but always find time to do it right the second time,,,,,

He. asked if it could be done,, not if it was the right way to do it. I think the "Monkey**** "title sums up my feelings towards doing it this way. I would not do it to a motor I was in love with. Dave
I don't see how you can make sure rod cap is in right with that engine horizontal reed motors you can use small dentist mirror to make sure I do it all the time

LOL;) me thinks gofast is burned out:iagree: his crack pipe melted through on da bottom, im not in love with any motor i just warranty my work after a few 100 of them i have it to a science all parts cleaned and separated in order of assembly it dont take me long to have one running more or less the 1/2 day or so (after i get started on assembly ) cleaning is on the other hand very time consuming

What do you like to use for cleaning blocks and exhaust? I have a 2.5 I am doing up right and need to clean it. Not sure if all the black carbon really needs to come off in the exhaust chest? Do you like to hose them down with engine degreaser then water wash?
Not quite sure the best way to clean all the parts.
Thanks, Dave

Dave i wash my blocks in hot soapy water with a brush in every hole then pressure wash it afterwards the machine grit is difficult to remove so maybe wash a couple times i hate open up a motor i just rebuilt to find those small marks left by machine grit or other stuff , i also remove sealing rings from crank and wash it they get stuff in the grooves which washes loose after it flooded with fuel in the crank cavity and so on the exhaust cavity not so much some times i blast it or wash with easyoff oven cleaner which does wonders

Thanks, getting some ez off. I always worry about the check valves getting gunked up while washing.
Appreciate the help.
Got all the new parts for my 2.5 mag 3 build, 200 tuner, carbs, reeds, spacer etc. Getting psyched for the build!
