What is the difference between the 1986-87 omc 200 looper stator and the 1988 and up? If I'm not using the quick start, could i still use an early stator on a 1988 and up system?

The 86/87 stator part numbers do not supercede up through the same part number chain as the 88 and up stators. These 88 and up engines also have the SLOW system, which may also affect the stator function...

Yes it will work but you will loose quick start and rpm limiter. 88 is same but gets an extra charge coil to run quick start and limiter. I would not run a stock flywheel above the limiter rpm.

That's what i figured, Racer. I'm not using the quick start anyway. My problem is that it wasn't charging and the tach was going in and out yesterday. I have the regulator/rectifier and stator off my '87 200 that i could use, i just wanted to make sure it would work. I believe my problem is the stator due to some discoloring on the cooper wire. How can i test it with an ohm meter? Is there a test for the regulator?

CDI Electronics website has troubleshooting and values to look for. Just do a Google search and you will find all you need in way of troubleshooting. I just went thru the process with a '89 GT175, my problem was timer base-no fire any plug. My Manual is loaned out in another state so google it was and I already knew of CDI and troubleshooting pages. Good luck-check regulator also.

I found the page yesterday, thanks. I replaced both the regulator and the stator with good used parts that i had. Neither one made a difference. I took the power pack off and started checking the output of the stator and it tested good. I also did some tests on the regulator and it passed. I bolted it back together and it started charging. Not sure what i did. I hate when a problem fixes itself, cause i don't know the cause. I'm guessing i have a bad wire or connection somewhere. I've checked everything and found nothing. Oh well. Going to run the river this weekend and keep an eye on it.
