Ive been fighting gremlins on this all summer. I have good spark at cranking speed. Went thru the carbs fuel system, new pump, lines, ball. Replaced ignition switch, starter, solanoid. (for other reasons). Replaced the stator. Problem is the starboard side bank, all three cylinders look very sooty and black, port side looks good. Seems to idle fine but breaks down and dies under load. Switch box, any other ideas?

start by checking the out put of the stator low and high windings with a DVA.....then use the DVA to check the out put of the switch boxes. you'll probably find it doing these tests

That ain't a DVA. If you want to track down a bug both quickly and economically, do the diagnostics instead of throwing parts at it.

Yes, well you're not in on the joke, but... oh, never mind. :nonod:

I replaced the selenoid because the starter stayed running. I replaced the ignition switch because the other one had some frayed wires. I replaced the starter with a 10 tooth instead of a 8 tooth because the 8 tooth gear gets beat up. 10 tooth works fine, no more beat up gear. Replaced the fuel components because they needed it. Stator replaced, other one had burned up charge coils. So Im not trying to just throw parts at it. But I am ready to throw it in the F*&^%in lake.

I feel your pain. I bougt a bass boat with an XR4 on it. Balked at WOT, but he cut me a good price and I bought it anyway. About 12 faults later, most installed by a "certified" mercury mechanic, it runs like a scalded dog.
Sometimes NEW means Never Ever Worked. Testing and verifying is your best bet.
Some of the items you've mentioned shouldn't happen. They happen because of mis-matched parts. Wrong starter drive is a clue. So is burned up stator coils. Verify that you're not trying to run a 16 amp stator under a 40 amp flywheel.

Thats what I dont understand about the starter. Its a 94 tooth flywheel which calls for a 8 tooth drive gear. 92 tooth flywheel for a 10 tooth gear drive. Theres no play in the flywheel or the starter. Yet the 8 tooth gets beat up. I just tried the 10 tooth since the number of teeth for the flywheel is so close, 10 tooth doesnt get beat up.
