I recently bought a 1987 Baja Sunsport 200 with a 1986 Evinrude 200XP. 325567
I checked it out before buying, compression, spark, lower unit etc...I also consider myself fairly well knowledgable in outboard mechanics having some experience working in a shop in my high school years (47 Now). When I first took the boat out I was thrilled, for about 15 minutes. It started bogging down, wouldnt get much over 4000 RPM and generally ran like doo doo..I went through the carbs, twice on some of them, checked jets, checked link and sync after buying FACTORY manual and scoured these message boards looking for similar problems...all of them pointed to carb/fuel issues. Maybe there is one somewhere that I missed but not one that I saw said check the STATOR!! I admit I was pointed in that direction after stopping in a local fishing station that I used to work to see the veteran Evinrude mechanic and he hinted to look there...sure enough, I ordered one from CDI, put it on and immediately knew it would run better! I cruised for 20 minutes and hardly a stumble..apparently, these years are prone to the stators overheating and the insulation deteriorating to the point of causing a weak electrical system and spark. I put new power packs on from CDI also, AFTER trying the Stator, just for good measure and their 8000 rpm rev limiter! NOW, my next question/project/issue for everyone on here is probably the same question on here from many: How do I make it Scream and Fly? I only got 55.3 tops on GPS..running stock, 14 1/2 x 21 aluminum prop. It has Hydraulic Jack plate, low water pick up LU and no bottom paint..I need to get something with a 7 in front of it for MPH! Anyone know of good articles, suggestions to start the journey for MORE POWER and MPH?!?!? This will be my goal and would like to keep this thread going lively until I get there...Reeds? Light Flywheel? Porting? Its running about 5900 RPM with the 21 prop..will obviously be a low budget project but would love some input! Thanks, love reading through this site..this has been somewhat of a dream of mine since I was a kid watching a couple of Hydrostream, Allison and Checkmate boats ripping across the bay doing 90+ mph...I know this aint the hull for 90+ but certainly 70+ is attainable?

You need to optimize what U have now before doing engine mods! Lets see some closer pictures of engine and lower unit. Oh... that aluminum prop got to go!!

Nice rig! It's all in the set-up. Those hulls are bow heavy and can use a lot of set-back. Those motors are pretty strong and the right set-up high 60's could happen. Maybe even a little more with the right choppy water conditions

Finding the right prop will get you the biggest gains for sure. Something with lots of lift that can carry that heavy hull. You could call your favorite prop shop or wait for someone on here to recommend one.

Thanks for the input. Something in agressive stainless was going to be my first plan now that it's running ok. I doubt that will achieve more than a few mph on the top end but I will take what I can get. Seem to be hearing a lot that these are fairly heavy hulls. I'll have to do some research to find what it should weigh. A complete rebuild is in the works over the winter. That's where I hope to get some input from here for mods while it's apart.

Stator output on poor running engines has been talked about several times and one of the first things I mention and verify. You also want to make sure your flywheel magnets are in good shape.

I have seen a the right prop make 10+mph gains vs the wrong prop. the right one will lift more of your hull out of the water and hold its bite longer to also get your motor higher out of the water

Very similar to my old Baja 180ss and '87 2.7 omc power. I ran a best of 72mph with a 6 inch jackpot and a 26 chopper prop. The boat needed all the trim I could give it to free up the hull. Very good all around boat. Yours will run in the 60's for sure with a better prop and setup.

HATE to rain on your parade but 70 with that hull you gonna need lots of h,p, it cold be unmanageable and dangerous 60 is not easy for a basic general v hull , i hope you can do it, ART

i,m guessing the engine is mounted on the transom in a standard engine height
raising the engine alone will already improve a lot preferably with setback plates

might want to add a water pressure gauge
and if you still like to water-ski with 4/5 people in the boat
get a 21 in stainless steel should be lots of them second hand
it,s better to be under-propped than over-propped

Its on a Land and Sea older style hydraulic plate.. not sure of the setback. This is on the list of things to rebuild or replace as it slowly bleeds down under load. I have read about these on here. Some says easy to fix with Orings, other say they are junk. I will find out all of this in the coming months. I plan on doing everything over on this boat, as much as a limited budget can handle anyway. I did get a new prop. http://www.ebay.com/itm/371374343616?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It didnt seem to make any difference. In fact I could argue it killed the hole shot. It feels heavier on teh start but more stable on the top end. Got about teh same RPM, slightly less at about 5600, The aluminum gave me about 5700-5800. I think the engine in its current state is not up to par. I think the reeds have issues as I get some fuel coming back out the front of the carbs. Then again, the entire fuel system could use new lines and clamps I am sure. Does anyone know if you can get aftermarket or good replacement carbs easily? The bowls are all warped. Fuel system will big big priority to fix. For now I am just using it as is for the ret of the short season up north. In the coming months I hope to post pics and the story of going through everything on this engine..

As far as the 70 MPH goal? Like I said, it may be a pipe dream with this hull and all but a guy can dream cant he? Besides the hull, I'm sure the wallet will give me problems when I discover what it will cost to get another 15 MPH out of this Dog! Should I start the crowdfunding now? :) Please help this poor old boat reach its goal of doing 70 MPH before it dies. Your donation is going to good cause....LOL!

I picked up a 17 foot 1977 Checkmate for free the other day too.. Maybe that one would be a better project...
