Hi all, I just bought a 1983 ranger 350V bass boat. It came with a 1984 Mercury Black Max 150. It has a 5" jack plate on it. I know it has a 25 pitch prop on it, but can't find the manufacture of the prop anywhere on it. I also know that the difference between the bottom of the boat and the center line of the prop shaft to the concrete floor at level is approximately 4 1/4 " with of course the prop being lower.
Not sure of gps speed or RPMs yet, but what do you think of this set up?
MORE INFORMATION- at WOT ( wide open throttle) RPMs 5800 / GPS speed 54 mph / water pressure 25. So is this enough information to make reccomendations for a better set up.

To deep. Good starting point is 3 1/2" propshact centerline to bottom of pad and then work from there

what will being 3v1/2" vs 4 1/4" do for me? maybe more speed or better hole shot? Also does the jack plate allow me to go higher with my motor?

What will going higher do for me

theory is for every 1 inch set back you can go up 1/2 inch till you start losing water pressure and hole shot

Being to deep increases drag in the water. Therefore getting engine up reduces drag therefore will increase top end and fuel efficiency. Keep in mind that you have to watch water pressure the higher you go. Ultimate setup will be with engine being high enough that motor at WOT rpms will be in correct operating range with adequate water pressure
