How long does it take to change the drive shaft in a stock 3 liter lower unit? A friend of mine had to get his changed and has been billed for 9 hours labor at a total of $1350 USD. Does this sound correct ?

No drive shaft was not broken it's just needed to be replaced . It had a 25" shaft and I needed a 20" shaft installed .How many hrs does that normally take ?

Like mentioned above..... salt water motors can be a real pita to get apart...... If it needs to be heated with a torch to get apart, there will bae a lot of corrosion to clean up and the case will have to be prepped and re-painted too. 2 - 3 hours max for a clean case, no salt........... 3 or more hours for salty dogs...... I have never spent more than an hour getting even the worst case apart, but the cleaning can take some time. The only shimming is the drive shaft itself. 9 hours is a bit high, but if there was a lot of corrosion and if the case had to be repainted, then I'd say it's close.
