View Full Version : 15 Allison Resto

2 years ago I picked up a 15 Allison and brought it home back to Canada. Completely gutted the whole boat and redid everything - the boat has a new core, transom, stringers, knees, and floor. I also blueprinted the bottom and repainted the whole boat as well. Along the way I decided I wanted to do something different. Thats when I got the idea to put a faring in the boat. Thanks to the generous Top Gun, he hooked me up with an STV river rocket faring. I had to modify the faring to fit the profile and lines of the boat and had to build the sides in to match the profile of the faring. To save weight on the rear I went with the 12" mid and a geigertec lightweight clamp both of which seem to fit the boat perfectly. The powerhead is a 245 (packing tons of punch) tucked underneath a Nass T3 cowl to fit the retro era of the boat. I'm super happy with how everything turned out. I took the boat for the first ride tonight and I'm still taking it easy on the fresh powerhead and getting it broken in but the boat drives and handles amazing. Definitely looking forward to getting this thing set up and running. There were lots of people involved to helping me get this boat where it is today and can't thank them enough.
Heres some progress pics of the build to show the start to finish.

LOL damn Parker sounded like your having a conversation with yourself there haha. There's always a chance for a speedy at some point, hopefully sooner than later. But your right, the boats pretty light and the 245 does haul ass. Took it out again tonight to start getting some more seat time in it. Brought it up to 5500 for a couple passes with a 28 drag and the feeling is just effortless. Maybe half down on the throttle so tons left in it yet.
Definitely looking forward to suwannee, that run will be a blast, my dad and I are both really looking forward to making that run (even though its one hell of a trip).

The boat sure gets loose when Mike gives her a bit of gas.....it sounds pretty good too. I'm impressed with all my son's long hours of refinishing the boat. There were many times the frustration and impatience of progress would set in and I would hear the dreaded comment at various stages of "it's good enough".....then I would get in trouble for finding any flaws. He learned to take a breather and spend the extra time to try and do it right. I am quite proud of his final result.

CDave...what do the old vintage ones look like?
I only have one but the style is like the one in the first pic of the boat ya posted; colors and size is, black and white 32" long by 5" tall. What exact year it's from I don't know. I just figured it was most likely a 70's era because it was black and white. You'd have to contact Allison to find out when that style were used. I don't know if that's too large for your hull?
I bought it around 10 years ago when I owned a XB2002 Comp just cuse it was up for sale and I wanted to preserve what I figured was a vintage Allison decal in case someone was restoring a vintage Ally and needed a decal that could be used to make an exact replica of the original. It seems to still be good. The adhesive is still good and the "cover" paper still peals off.
Also here's a pic of a vintage 16ft Ally with a 2.4 Merc on it. It use to belong to a member over at ByUBoyz, HO2FO. That's him driving it at one of the Allison Rally's.

Can you provide some more details and pics on the clamp? Is it integrated with a jackplate? How much setback did it add?
My little boat / big engine project has been on the back burner for a couple years. One thing suggested to me was in order to keep the bow down at speed (boat designed for 70-90hp, not 200+) was to run as little setback as possible, or zero. But then you have packaging problems with a short motor and the forward tip of the bullet on the lower unit or nosecone.
Maybe that engine assembly is light enough it can handle a little more setback? Any idea what it weighs?

There is a thread on here titled "Lightweight 12" clamp bracket". The guy that makes them is local for me and it was the best option for the boat. A couple things I wanted to avoid were 1) weight, 2) setback, and 3) drilling a hole through the transom to run the trim ram. With the old style studs up 12" can that I have, the only 2 options were to either cut a hole in the transom to run the trim ram through and then be able to bolt the motor right to the transom, or was to use a 9" set back bracket in which the trim ram could fit inside of therefore preventing drilling a hole through the transom. The problem with this however was the distance from the transom to the swivel was almost 16" which would have been much too far back IMO to get the lever right for the boat.
By using the clamp bracket that is on the boat now I was able to save weight (over the stock set up using the setback bracket/trim ram/swivel) because this unit is an all-in-one so to speak. I was also able to get the motor closer to the boat, where now the distance from the transom to the swivel is around 8". I can definitely take some more detailed pics of the set up but I know the thread on here has many pictures detailing how the clamp brackets are made.
I would have to say a good guess on the weight of the motor is probably around the 300# mark. I know the clamp/can assembly is 56 pounds, the powerhead is lets say 200 (someone can correct me on this if they know exactly) and the sport master is probably another 40-50 so 300 is a good ballpark. I do know the 2.5 s3000 stuff with a speedmaster weigh in around 275# so with the full size gearcase it will be slightly heavier than that.

Thank you for you concerns, I have been told that as well. I haven't ever seen it happen but have heard the stories and don't want that to be the case here. The boat is actually very planted and very stable. I've been taking my time with getting the set up right to prevent that possibility as much as I can. The biggest thing I actually like about this boat compared to others I have driven is that very little trim is needed which helps keeping the boat nice and flat.

I haven't really run it much for top end since that one pass but to answer the previous post there was little to no chine walking at all and the boat sits and feels very well planted. I am honestly not sure what the prop started its life as, but Todd at hydromotive worked the prop originally for a 14' Allison and he can comment as to what the prop actually is (because I can't remember) but whatever he did its very nice, smooth, well balanced running prop. I have a cleaver to try on it as well but haven't run it yet.
Set up is going to be difficult to say though comparing the 2 boats. To my understanding the 16' is quite different than the 15' (somebody who knows more on the history of them can fill in the blanks better). I do know that the pad width on the 15' is just shy of 6" and the 16' is actually around 9". And supposedly the 16' has more lift built in at the front, and those two factors alone can cause huge differences in set up. If you have any questions though can shoot me a private message.

I believe your prop started out as a merc chopper and then Todd does what they refer to as a "knob" cut and then work the prop from there.

Just ran across this thread, and that is one FINE looking 15! Hope you can bring it to the next Allison rally in Knoxville. There was a really slick looking R15 there last month with a 150XS and a Speedmaster. Owned a 15 myself and it was a great boat.

Thank you very much! Too bad its such a long drive otherwise that would be a fun run to be at. Both my dad and I are planning to be at suwannee with our boats in November though, really looking forward to that run, have been told its a blast.

I've heard the same thing about Suwannee and may head down there myself with my '79 SS20. In fact, the guy who had that R15 at the Allison rally told me about a vintage boat show in central Florida (can't remember where exactly) that I'd like to check into. Seems like it's around that same time, but maybe somebody on here knows about it.

Forgot I had these on my phone but thought you might like them. Check out the custom aluminum bracket. Oh yeah, I had a brain fart as that one is a R14.

these guys in Canada do nice work:thumbsup:
I had a good look at it when you had it on a trailer going up the 400 this past summer. It looks sharp.

Things are definitely getting better. It's getting more dialed in and picking up really well. Have a new prop coming hopefully next week and will be interesting to see where that puts me.
Definitely spends a lot of time on 400 lol. Thanks for the comment.
I recognized the boat from this site, traffic was a bit heavy and I rolled the window down and said a few words to you, then went on up the road to where the water tastes like wine.
