The E-trex euro works good for me.
Has a max. speed recall, which is what most want.
No usage fees, just batteries :D

Steve,
The GPS system was put into existence by our government for:
1. Battlefield management
2. "smart weapon" guidance
3. commercial (aka airliners, ocean liners and cargo ships) and
civil (us:D ) navigation
So, you paid for it with your tax dollars. Definitely money well spent by our Federal Government.
I think the only persons who disagree are Sodomy Hussein and
Osama Bin Laden:D. It works too well for those assholes!
Regards,
Steve;)

I just picked up a third GPS, not sure why, just had to have it at a swap meet. It's Garmin GPS 45. It is still in the box with the strap, and instruction book. Looks like new and works fine. I tested it in my truck. I have three GPS's now amd don't need this one. I will let it go for $55.00 shipped to Texas. It does not have the max speed recall as far as I know though. Never checked. You could go to www.garmin.com and check though. I do know it was $299.99 at Gander Mountain new. But I am sure the price of GPS's was higher when this one was bought. I just looked and I don't think they make the 45 anymore. It looks just like the GPS-48 pictured here though. http://www.garmin.com/products/gps48/

They are a must have to gey the B.S. factor out of top speeds!
$55 sounds like a decent deal for sure.I have just upgraded to a Garmin Legend,It has the top speed recall that has 589 mph from
a recent trip to Florida:p
Cant use a cell phone but a GPS on a plane is just fine:rolleyes:
There is also a family sport if you have to justify your purchase to a spouse,WWW.Geocaching.com
we found this stash on Indian Key on vacation,it was fun.One girl was from Israel and her boyfreind from Switzerland.this stash is accesable from boat only.See ya Dave
P.S. The guy without pants is from Switzerland:D

cp, the one im getting is an older gps 45. dont think it has it, not sure. thanks for checking, steven
Don't forget that you might want to use it for hiking, or navigating in the car and stuff like that!
I bought the Etrex Vista, this is the top of the line Etrex. It has a base map of the whole damn country, which maps out major roads and freeways, it knows all the mile markers and exit numbers, shows your position on the map. You can buy detailed maps on CD-ROM and load them into its 24 MB memory for street level detail.
This unit also has a barometric altimeter accurate to +/- 1 ft., as well as an electronic compass. Other GPS units can only tell you direction if you're moving in that direction, this one works standing still. None of the other GPS units cheaper than this one will do all that stuff. It has sun and moon phases, a calendar, a calculator, a skydiving jump master program (?) and a bunch of other stuff. Also, it's small, the size of some cell phones.
I got mine from a yahoo store called www.getagps.com
This guy sells them $80 below Miinimum Advertised Price. The Vista is $350 from most catalogs, that's the "MAP" price.
I got mine for $277 plus shipping, and there's a $50 rebate available on this unit too, I'm sending in for it tomorrow.
So, consider, you can get the cheapest thing made for $100, or you can get one that does everything for $225 after rebate.
We took my vista snowmobiling on the last good cool snowy weekend a couple weeks ago, and we got lost off the beaten path in the woods at night, and the GPS got us back to our cabin. We were in heavy tree cover, so we lost GPS signal, but the compass told us we were facing the wrong way and needed to turn around to get back home. Other GPS units can't do this sitting still and with no signal.
After we got back home, I took the sled out on the ice, it had rained and re-froze the snow while we were up north, so it was bare ice. Speedometer said 98, GPS says 89.9. Still pretty quick for me. I was the last person to take a sled on the ice this year before the big warm-up.
