I have a 19' Bahner tunnel (Mod VP hull) and the sponsons are always full of water (low freeboard). The gas tanks don't leave enough room to fit even the smallest bilge pumps, so they usually don't get emptied until the boat comes out of the water and I pull the plugs.
I found a solution and I'd thought I'd share it now that I tried it and it worked fairly well.
I only have enough room for something about 1 1/4" round between the tank and the transom/side of the tunnel. I found these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/100PSI-DC12V-4L-Min-Solid-Electric-Diaphragm-Water-Pump-Self-Priming-for-RV-Boat-/281366070408?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4182b98488
I mounted them high and dry on the transom and ran hoses down to the back corners of the sponsons. I used some PVC pipe caps and brass barb fittings, along with some aerator screen to make some strainers to keep debris outta the pumps and used some zip ties to hold them in place. They're a bit slow, but they get the job done and they're cheap. These things self prime and pull water over 3 feet of vertical rise (I tested them before installing).
My boat is a poorly planned design, so I imagine others will leave room for a pump of some sort, but maybe these will help someone.
