Thinks its a 1968 because of the color of the decals.

That's why most people want them and what they do with them.

That is correct - if you really know your Mercs and decals. More casual fans make the seller's mistake of thinking the last red decals were on the 1971 1350 ... and these sort of resemble the 1968 1250 stripes.

Sam does that motor got an alum, fly wheel? How much horse power ?, is it a better motor than a 45ss? What kind of rpm? Left hand or right hand?

This motor couldn't even run against a 40cu Mark 55. Many were acquired by many to rob the gearcase and downhousing for 4cyl engines.

Exactly.

The downhousing isn't exactly the same as the 4 cylinders but can be cut up so it fits. The 45ss will eat one of these alive. I believe the 45ss is 55+hp and the 402 is 35hp. 5,500 rpm left hand prop; standard heavy flex plate cast iron ring flywheel. The heavy flywheel and 2 cylinders were what killed it as a race motor ... it couldn't slow for the turns and gyro'ed against the boat rolling. To perform well, new boats would have to have been developed and racers weren't really interested. In the end it killed 2 classes, the old OMC dominated 35 Runabout class and its own 35ss class.
