I have a couple of 300x's that need 92 octaned but the marina only has 89. I keep the boat on a lift so there's no tow it to the gas station opportunity. What is the best way to increase the octane rating without hurting the motors? I have heard that toulene @ about a 10% mixture (1 gal toulene to 10 gals of gas) with a few onces of injection oil will do the trick and have heard other stuff too. I have learned a lot from this board and the collective experience of all those who share this "go fast" bug with me. Time to learn a little more!!

I do know that toluene is a major factor in the octane booster, however what ratio and what other things are mixed in is anybodys guess. 300X's are and expensive test monkey though:rolleyes:

Toluol, Toluene, Methyl Benzine - all names for the same stuff. It is a prime ingredient in race fuel (5-30%) or a good paint solvent. It has a Research octane from 120-124, and a Motor octane from 110-112. Taking the lowest numbers (typical solvent grade) will give a R+M/2 of 115 octane. Since it has a specific gravity of 0.83 (compared to around 0.74 for premium pump gas, and 0.73 for race leaded fuel) it burns faster - giving slightly improved milage with the same jetting/ecu setting.
At 10% (9 parts 89 octane to 1 part 115 octane) you will get around 91.6 R+M/2 octane without slowing the burn rate like race fuel will do.
This is NOT experimentation.
The BEST fuel additive / octane booster I have found to date is TK-7 manufactured by Moshe Tal at TAL Technologies in Oklahoma City, OK. They have a 2-stroke race gas formula that when added at 1/4 oz. per gallon, is AMAZING. This stuff actually WORKS! no BS or SSSSSSnake - oil. I like it so much I have 2 DRUMS in my shop.

I have emailed them for some follow up info, but this seems very promising. I certainly appreciate you taking the time to share this with me.

I have used the "104" brand for years. It works. Especially the race stuff in the black bottle. There are many that don't work.
Try it in your car first where you can hear the ping without the motor melting down on you. You'll be surprised most octane booster is nothing more than gas treatment.
I have heard good things about that TK-7, I'll have to try some. The 104 stuff is available in most auto parts stores.

Hey guys, I checked the web sites and other info offered by the octane booster manufacturers. All of the stuff they sell at the auto store say they increase octane by 2 points or even 5 points, etc... What I found out was a "point" is a decimal point. 5 points is .5 octane, so 89 octane fuel plus the booster makes 89.5 octane. Are there any boosters available in stores that will boost 2-3 full octane points? I considered xylene but dont feel comfortable making my own mix out of stuff on a home depot shelf.
Thanks

Marina gas at the least is suspect in less you see it fill every couple of days. All the additives scare me because do they mix with alcohol for I think alot more of our fuel has it added. Example wife fills car travel 160 miles burns 3/4 tank no performance etc. Get up the next morning and car wont start. I had to dump the throttle bodies to get the car to start. It starts blows a white like mist threw exhaust and smell like alcohol. Fuel is suspect at the least smell it before you try and burn it. Rick

Wayne what engine do you run this fuel additive through.
Roughly what compression figures do you see.
Do you know if this would be suitable for use in a Mercury F1.
Avgas seems to be hard to get hold of in my area.
Also the fuel rating here in the UK for super-unleaded pump gas is 97 octane.
I have been told that I need 105-107.

I have used this booster in many different types of engines. I have only used the "two-stroke race gas formula" as insurance for octane in fuel from questionable source in Mercury two stroke engines. I have never tried cutting heads on a lake engine to find how much compression is the limit when using this additive - BUT I WILL SOON.
I have seen 3-4mph gains in some friends outboards, with reduced planing time and cleaner burning plugs. I have even had one guy to whom I gave a gallon SWEAR that it made his Allison GS w/ 225 Merc gain 5 mpg on GPS, but I have not witnessed this.
My family ski boat is a 21 ft. bowrider by Bahner (looks like a 21 Advantage) with a 383 ci. small block Chevy that was built for 100 octane unleaded race fuel. This engine actually makes more power on 91 octane premium pump gas with 1/4 oz of tk-7 per gallon of gas. AND has never showed any sign of detonation.
I am looking for 10 individuals who are willing to track gps mph, rpm, and weather data while running their boats both with this additive and without. I will be posting a new thread on this soon.

I could always try it in the flamer!
