Its a 2.5L 280. I can run a compression and take pics today.

Hours are low. I'll need to check on them since the boat is a 1997 and the motor was replaced by the original owner in 2004. He paid $25,000+ installed for the new not rebuilt race motor in 2004. I'm the second owner. Hours are very low. Neither myself or the original owner used the boat as much as we would have liked. Original owner was a fire chief and the boat was kept inside the firehouse all the time.

Just ran a cold test. Results are 120lbs on cylinder 1 and 117lbs on cylinders 2-6. I'm going to splash the boat later today and run a warm test to compare.

That seems low on a 280 my 2004 280 had 147 to 150 both rebuilds , i think atleast 140 but maybe im wrong

The pic shows 134-135 psi on that one hole. Need better pics of the gearcase. Also, is this a fresh or saltwater motor?

The first comoression readings were cold crank compression readings. Warm crank were 130 +

Also specs on the 2.5L are 110 to 135 with no more than 10 psi dif between cylinders. 130psi is actually really good plus all cylinders are within 3psi.

I believe it's a fresh water motor. I've never had it in salt water.

All compression gauges are not the same

All compression gauges are not the same

If compression gauges varied that much exactly what would the point be of having very specific bench mark specs. Maybe cheap gauges vary. These tests were taken with a Mac tools gauge. The one way the motor could have had 145 to 150 is of it had been shaved.

If this motor is a 280, the compression numbers if "healthy" are lower than one would expect them to be.

Really?

Please provide the basis of your "healthy" input. If you shave the heads you can achieve 145 to 150 compression is to shave the heads. The stock compression is 110 to 135. 135 being a brand new motor.

Have a nice Christmas.........the basis is on 2 healthy 280's, one mine, one my sons, and neither had the heads shaved. Do you have any leak down numbers on it?

Again I had a 2004 280 and several people I know compression stock is usually 145 to 150. 110 to 120 are usually on 3 liter or older merc. All my 260s where 138 to 145 . Again maybe I'm wrong

When we go through tech at the races, all of the S-Class boats read 135 to 140. This is using the same gauge on all of the motors with the throttle plate open. We all run stock 280s that are kept fresh.

My BONE STOCK 2005 280 had even 150 psi on all holes using a MAC TOOLS comp gauge. It had less than 50 hrs on it before I sold it. Motor still looks good and I would love to have another. The price ain't bad even if it is a little wore out. I wish I had the money. I need another one.

145-150 psi on all three of my 280's....all bone stock.

Still would like to see pics of the lower unit.

147 to 150 on both of ours..............bone stock.

Thanks very much for that clarification. Exactly what I would expect boats having been gone through and ready for a race. This being a 10 year old $25000 head unit 130+ with no issues is pretty darn good in my book. Motor starts every time with just the bump on the key.

Have a Merry Christmas

My mechanic, Ed Ezra, by the way is a certified marine mechanic with more than 30 years experience and is one of the most respected mechanics in Nor Cal.

I'd bet on gauge not being accurate. Bet if it was checked with another gauge the numbers would be better. Seen too much variation between gauges. A leak down would tell the story for sure.

I agree with Michael.
Have a leak down performed by your mechanic, that's the only way to know the true condition of the engine.

Better yet, I say that motor is NG and is done....I can help dispose of it....;):D
GLWS, that's a very good price if it checks out.....
