Chris, that's funny!.....:D
Heavy, what motor are you building? Fishing or HP drag motor?
IMPO, This is important info to make a wise decision. No matter what rod you decide on, I recommend to use new rod bolts on a used rod.

what is big??? 5250 like on the mayflower motors of ancient time or the chat field rod of todays stuff, early bottom guide 5250 are too wide for pin gap on top guide pistons must be ground off .100 thousandths 50 each side,141 rods are what goes on to tg pistons but you can put what ever if you know how and what to do. early small rod bottom guide 118 are lots of them floating round i have a slew of them myself wee found in all sorts of mota sizes

What are the best bolts for the late 141 rods with the slot in the top pin boss?
Also where is the best place to get them?
I have seen different prices on the same part on some sights. What's up with that?
One a Merc factory part and one aftermarket?
Do you need to mod the rod for the HP bolts?

You dont really need to mod the rod for the ARP bolts. Use a small head 16 point socket and you clear the cap just fine. It would be nice of ARP sold them without having to go through a middle man but they do not. Best price Ive seen is $15 for the 848475 ARP's . I'm sure the wholesale price is a fraction of that so there may be better deals out there. I guess it depends what you doing with them . The TTY Mercury 10-76349 1 bolts are good up to 7500 ish if you don't do something stupid like re use them and the RB8000 Pro Marine non TTY's are $3 or less a pop and "supposedly" 10K higher strength than the fishing motor merc bolts.

So if you keep the RPM's at 8000 using the ARP bolts with a 141 rod will not have any issues?

I have used small rods 141 in a 280 spinning 9 grand plus with no problem I have seen them in drag motors to with no problem either

IMO You will have to lay back the rod cap boss a bit to allow a 12 PT socket to attach solidly . I do them all the time and use the 41 series Pro Max rods turning over 10,000 and with a gang of compression , they work fine for me and my customers....

I have a GM power parts socket made for 12 point rod bolts that fits perfectly with the mercury hipo rod bolts. Very thin at the end. Only thing made by GM I'd ever own.

So what are the differences between 141 pro max and other rods. The 141 rods I have came out of a 240 sport jet.
Thy have the slot on the top pin boss.

The 225 pro max rods are the same as the standard fishing motor top guided 2.5 141 rods. Nothing fancy. Mercury Torque to Yield bolts. The hipo 141 rods in 260's and 280's had oiling holes drilled in the top and had additional heat treat steps according to some sources and had the SPS or later ARP bolts. .

Is it worth the time to side polish the rods?
