i can take a hand on one side and one on the other side and get a slight movement side to side, very slight. tried a stock motor and it moved a bit but less than mine. am i nuts? just dosen't seem like it should, only 35hrs on fresh rebuild. the flywheel is tight on crank. anybody ever try this? fun out.

Depending on type, I know the ring gear area will move up as rpm goes up....never checked the "run out"......guess I'll try that when it gets back together:rolleyes:

the things starts and runs very nice, i've only run it on the trailer since a new flywheel has been installed. just wonder if anybody ever noticed the same in another motor. fun out.

Is the washer under the nut?? Is it possible to run out of threads before it tightens all the way??
Just tryin to eliminate the obvious. get it ready Fun !!!

it's not the flywheel moving, the whole crank seems have some play, maby i'm not feeling what i think i am but it's just not REAL tight, the stock motor i tried moved some, about 1/2 as much as mine. :( fun standing by,

If it is a mercury V6 you can feel very little side to side movement. When the top bearing starts to wear (small beraing models) you will hear a noise from under the flywheel when you shake it and it will move more. I used to check this after every trip to the lake with a race motor. Be sure you have plenty of oil going through bleed tube to the bearing also.

this is sounding like what i expected, it is a 78 175 w/very low hrs. and recently rebuilt, not sure if a top bearing is a common part replaced on rebuild. i noticed a noise, but not listening to them everyday hoped it could be my paranoia. it has been turned at high rpms a bit. can the top bearing be changed w/o complete teardown? (i got this bad feeling) fun out.

The cases will have to be split to change the bearing. Even if the motor is not oil injected it still sends oil to the top bearing through small hoses using crankcase pulses and fuel/oil that is in the intake. I always run clear line to the bearing oiler fitting. That way you can see if it is getting plenty of lube. Mr Fun it could be a lot worse. I learned this lesson with a broke crank ruined flywheel and a cowling that looked like it went through a sawmill.

while idleing, kinda sporadic. thats what tipped me off, inconsistant sound. do i have to disassemble the crank assy, rods etc or leave it all in place? fun out.

you just have too take off the front half
look at the cranckshaft for any wear
change the complete top bearing
put the front half back on
buy yourself a mercury manual too see what too do
like using loctite mastergasket between the 2 halfs
etc
you dont have too remove the cranckshaft and the rods

lookin at it this morn, dosn't seem like an awfull process, i've seen racers at the end of races pop a front off and pull a piston for inspection in 10-15 mins. so i guess it's not like a total breakdown. the thing got hit by another boat and the bow actually was ground like a buzsaw by the flywheel for what seemed like 5 mins. probably more like 5 secs. but i'm thinkin the pressure w/engine running pushing may have caused abnormal wear on the one side, hell, it warped the flywheel. got new one. but i think this may be the one thing the expert may have overlooked. thanks guys, fun out.
