View Full Version : Chopper On Starliner/Starflite?

I've got a 24 Trophy on my Starliner bowrider (21ft, no pad, 5.5" setback, 6 inch notch, on a 250 EFI 1.75 standard lower, cut tuner, CCM reeds, 4 butterfly intake, and 300 ignition box) and its a little under propped and a great all around prop but I think a 26 Chopper would give this hull more lift (bow and stern) and get me some more MPH. Just looking for input on it since I can pick one up locally for a good price from someone on here. When I tried a Chopper the boat seemed to like it. It felt like it rode higher and from the picture I saw it looked like it too. Also seemed that with the Chopper it didn't chine walk like it tends to with the Trophy. I'm guessing some of the experience from the SOB type boats would carry over onto this one.

Input?? You've got it, listen to the boat (and no one else).

I guess we could ask the bunny:confused:

Thanks Pete, your right that the bunny is all knowing.

Here's a couple of pics, I think that if my memory is right about which prop was on the boat on which day I know which prop the boat likes better as far as running all out.

99.9% sure this is with my 24 Trophy:

99% sure these two were with a 26 Big Ear:

I can't deny it was over trimmed in that last picture but I was trying to see what worked with a prop I never tried before and it just happened that my buddy was out on the lake putting docks away for the season and snapped a couple of pics.

It seems I can run the motor higher with the Chopper, if I jack the motor as high with the Trophy it can't carry the bow and slows down. I also don't have a LWPU but the top 4 intake holes on each side are plugged. Right now I'm only about 3 or 4 mph off from what the Challenger this motor was on ran with a 26 Bravo (iirc) so for a heavier boat with no pad and I'm pretty sure less set back I think I'm doing pretty well.

If you can, try a lightning ET. Lifts the whole boat.

Don't forget, you can add cup to the tips of the Chopper for even more bow lift so you won't have to over trim.

Thanks. The Lighting is probably going to be way out of my budget if I can even find a used one. I guess I know what I have to do.

Just add bunny ears or pancakes to your prop

Thanks Bobby. Definitely bring it. I'd love to give it a whirl. Thinking about putting a set of 4 inch spacers from Bob's Machine. Just don't want to hurt the transom.

it looks like it could use a little setback cause it looks like it klikes lots of possitive trim

I agree. Seems the consensus is 10 inches minimum set back and I have about half of that.

I just got a Starliner and we started testing some props and my 26 chopper felt real good on the boat. Almost pulled the fastest speed the previous owner got in the first couple hours of using the boat (and it was a choppy day).

ET's have LESS bow lift than a Chopper or Trophy. No way.

Like Transomstand said, you can have extra cupping added the Chopper to give it more bowlift and make it bite better out of the hole, but you will drop some RPM's.

The Tempest Plus 3-blade is an awesome "everything lift" prop for the big Checkmate hulls.

What rpm's are you turning John? Do you know what engine heights your jack will get you? Is there a jack gauge so you know where it is? Water pressure gauge? I've been messing around with engine heights, setback, props, lower units all season. It can drive you nuts. It just made me more broke and no faster. There is always the weather that's a big factor too. Made some changes last week. Thought I gained 2 mph. But so did Scott with no changes. Bring it to LI. It will be way faster haha.
