I have 1987 voyager hydrosteam with 6 in set back 4 in up with a 1986 175 evinrude with a 14 1/2 x 22 raker I get 60 mph on the gps I am thinking of getting 150 etec Ho to save gas I am wondering if performance will be the same or better thanks

Is the boat solid? Core, transom, floor? Most old streams need all 3, so there is no point buying a new motor if your boat needs a lot of work.

Drag is proportional to the square of speed. If I assume you are going from 175 to 150, that would work out to 55 mph. If I assume the HO really puts out 165 HP, then 58 mph. Somewhere around there.

If the boat is solid, I'd buy a bigger HO. 200, 225, or 250. Not a lot more money, not a lot more thirsty, and the Voyager can handle a big motor.

You can buy a lot of gas for the 10K or more this will cost. The gas savings will never pay for the cost of green. Despite that, I will probably do the conversion to green as I like to cruise farther than my thirsty promax will take me on a single tank.

150HO will run circles around an old worn out crossflow.

How do you know the old motor is worn out? My brother's 89 200 GT Johnson is as fast now as it was 25 years ago. I take your point, if the motor is worn out, the new one would be faster. Might not matter anyway, only one post...

It will burn half the fuel at cruise and smoke it in acceleration. The DI tuning and flat torque curve will move mass much better then the carb crossflow even if both were brand new. Even if peak HP is the same thats not what moves mass (the boat) 99% of the time.

My 2000 hour 200HO E-tec put boat lengths on my brothers stock 200GT and the HO had a 34 on it. Boat weight was very close.

Wheely: You will love the Etec. We have a 115 HO on our 'family' boat and it's great on gas and very strong at all speeds for a small V4.

Baja200Merc: Would a new Etec 200 small block or a 150HO have the low end skier power and mid range of my brother's 1989 200GT? I have read that DI's accelerate better and our 115 is way better than the 100 crossflow that I had before. But the small blocks are giving away a lot of displacement vs the old 3L. How much would it give away on top end? What would be better for a 18' 800 lb pad V bottom boat (basically an 18 foot version of the 21 Challenger), the 150 HO or the 200?

Sorry for the hijack, but Wheely has made his decision:)
