I am new here, not into racing ou high performance, just ordinary boating. Someone on The Hull Truth suggested to post my problem here. I have 2 '99 carbed Johnson 225's. I noticed that 1 is noisier than the other at idle. Both run great at speed. Someone had suggested a wrist pin bearing, I pulled all the plugs and pushed on each piston with a dowel on their down stroke, there was no play or noise. I want to keep these motors running for another couple of years, can't afford a repower right now so I don't want to do any damage by running it.
I recorded both motors for your listening pleasure:smiletest:.

Kinda sounds like possible piston slap to me. I could be wrong does it seem to quite down some after a long run then coming back down to idle? I have heard them sound like that when they have a few cylinders out of round and piston skirt causes that noise. It's most noticeable when motor is idled down. Maybe try a compression and leak down test, that will give you a good ideal of what kinda shape your cylinders are in. I don't want to point you in wrong direction maybe someone else will chime in on this.

Check for up and down or side to side play at the flywheel

Check to see if there are any metal flakes in the lower unit. I have had a lower unit start to let go and it was noisy at idle.

Check to see if the noisy motor someone may have left out the (exhaust housing-inner lower) when changing waterpumps.I have a motor with it removed and it sounds like that. Reference # 57 in the exhaust housing drawing on here, look your motor up here

That part is kind of big to leave out, besides I have changed pumps several times so I know it is in there. I idled the motor after a good run and it did seem to get a little quieter so maybe piston slap as someone suggested?

pull the air box off and see if any of the reeds are broken or the flywheel magnets are loose.
Also check the upper bearing carrier under the stator and make sure its not loose or cracked.

How would I see any broken reeds? Through the carb throats?

actually, I think he meant to make sure both seals are there... a missing seal will let that part bounce around in there

Get a stethescope and listen close to narrow the source of the noise.

WOT and a flashlight through the carb, yea will be hard to see but you will see most of them.
