View Full Version : Big loss for me today

303257303258303259Learned a very hard lesson today.Got in a hurry when I locked the trailer to the truck and did not notice that the little locking trigger did not catch the latch. It cost me my boat!------ Ok guys I need honest helpful info.I bought this boat new in 81 and don't want to give It up without a fight,it would be easier to let go,if I blew it over, but for 35 years it's brought me home safe. And I should do the same.So if it's possible it needs to be fixed.Tell me what you think. My problem is at 62 I'm a lot slower, and this will be a big undertaking for me.My plan is to strip it,then pull the deck and decide if and how to repair.I know that from a resale value It's not worth it,but what the hell, it's going to be a long winter here.My questions are 1.do you think it's fixable within reason--2.Does anyone have a chart with gell coat colors from 81----3. There was a fella that had some OE rub rail does anyone know where to find it.Thanks to all!!!! :(

Sounds like your heart and sole is in that boat . We all have done some stupid things over the years and if it was mine I would be getting itchy rite now and back on the water before next event lol . Me at 40 at and hope to be still boating at 60 ;) good luck and yes a good glass man can save it . Far as resale I highly doubt with the boat being fixed rite will affect the price at all . It's the boats that do not get fixed rite that hurts the resale of a damaged boats.

I had the same thing happen to me with my tandem axle work trailer, around 2 ton. Like you I was very, very, lucky. As a boat builder I can say that the beauty of glass boats, they can always be fixed one way or another. Distance precludes me lending a hand. Good luck, I will keep an eye on the rebuild.

Safety chains,we're on they are S hooks and the boat was a little tail heavy.I have the bad habit of hooking them from the bottom up instead of the top down, when it came undone the trailer came up and when I tapped the brake it came undone.Next one will have the spring loaded clips. As for the repair the only way I feel I can do it right is by splitting it,being a comp drag model,it does not appear to be bonded at the seam.I don't feel that I can work under the dash and under the gunnels and do a proper repair. Also the transom seems to be fine but at 33 years old,If the top is off it may be time to look at replacing it.Other than the very back of the pad having a chunk broke out of it the bottom is still almost perfect. The other option may be to find the right guy,and get a quote. But only thing I can remember paying anyone to fix,is my computer, and my refrigerator :D

Sight of a man's boat smashed up makes my stomach churn.
Glad to hear no one was hurt.
Considering the age of the hull and it's recent unfortunate circumstance, you are correct in wanting to pull the cap and inspect, fix/repair the interior structure of the hull if necessary.
Especially if operating at high speeds.
I recently finished a 4 yr rebuild on a flats boat of mine and would not even think about attempting to do such ever again.
Chemicals have a tendency to really kick our arses once we get up in age.
Not to mention having to wear respirators, jump suits, etc., etc.

I was surprised to see any balsa in the comp model, but even more surprised to find dry non rotted balsa in the very lowest part of a 30+ year old Hydrostream.I quess always pulling the plug, and storing nose up paid off.If I can determine the transom is that dry it will be a big help.

I would undertake as much of the repair as possible with the cap on to stabilize the structure.
Then pull the cap to get what you could not reach as well as search for hidden issues.
Being that structural glass work is best done from both sides of a part you can not get it all without splitting to hull anyways.
Sad that the chains unhooked,I hang them from the top, I know people that hang them from underneath. I think I will stick to my guns there but yes those irritating clips do have value as does installing a pin or lock in the coupler.

I'm taking a few days to come up with a plan,The left side is ok,all the damage is on the right side and pad.You are right,it will not be vary stable with cap off.Im thinking I may make cuts down all the fractures to release the tension, and regain the proper shape, then get one layer on the outside, enough to hold it then pull the deck and go to work. But at this point I'm open to advise from those that do this regularly.

08-12-2014, 06:55 PM
I'm really sorry to see that happened. :(. It is certainly easily fixable, though, and you could maybe use this as an opportunity to maybe make some changes or additions to the boat while you're at it. Maybe turn this incident into a way to make your boat better than it was before.
From what I could see though, the damage is relatively minor. It could have been far worse.

Before you remove the cap take measurements and log them.
After you remove the cap you will want to reinforce the upper sections of the hull with braces to keep the hulls sides from flaring out on you.
Take a couple of 2x4s, cut to length, place inside and run ratchet straps around the hull to keep the original contour in place while doing the glass work.
After hull is stabilized double check the measurements against your original measurements, adjust accordingly if necessary.
In reference to where the cracks are, grind surfaces down to glass and drill a couple of holes in line at the end of the cracks and a 1" to 1-1/2" past where the cracks stop. This will prevent the crack from traveling any further.
Make sure your substrate surfaces are 100% completely decontaminated and washed down with acetone before applying any glass matting and resin.
Makes sure you thoroughly grind all surfaces with 24 grit disk for a proper mechanic bond.
Make sure areas requiring new glass end up with new glass being applied over old glass.
Not new glass being laid over old gel coat.
Glass must meet glass.
Once you start laying out glass make sure all air bubbles are rolled out of each layer.
Air bubbles/voids are BAD.
Go to a local glass and resin supplier or order on line and purchase a perforated roller for removing the air bubbles.
Make sure layers of glass are applied to the outer side and interior side of hull where applicable.
First layer should overlap the affected area by 3".
Apply each additional layer over lapping one another a minimum of 3".
First layer smallest, 2nd layer larger and so on, so on.
Use a standard 1.5oz glass matting for initial layer, 2nd layer something along the line of 1708 Bi-Axle matt.
Alternate these type of layers until you feel satisfied with structural stability.
The Bi-Axel matting has 1 side of 1.5oz matting while the other side has glass strands.
The glass strands are to be facing upward or outward.
Make sure you have a 5 gallon can of acetone handy, you'll need it.
Last but not least, wear a respirator, jump suit and gloves when mixing and applying resin and glass.

As previously stated, interior and exterior of the affected areas will have to be glassed.
Make sure your have a proper heavy duty profile on the existing glass, as described above. (mechanical bond)
I would recommend a minimum of 3 layers of 1.5oz glass and 2 layers of 1708.
That should more than take care of your issues.
If it makes you feel better add an additional layers of glass.
I would recommend the use of Vinyl Ester resin.
http://composite.about.com/od/Resins/a/Vinyl-Ester-Vs-Polyester-Resins.htm
Can't really tell from pics but you may need to pre-form some material and temporary install on the interior side of any large holes on the hull to get a perfect finished contour of the exterior.
This method will save you ALOT of finish sanding and shaping.
If you have more questions I will be more than happy to help you out with advise.

Additionally, once you get that thing all repaired and looking pretty again your insurance company will more than likely want a Survey and Appraisal.
Save yourself the $300+ and provide them with a "Declaration of Rebuild".
Be sure to take lots of pics as you go along as well.
The Declaration of Rebuild is also basically drafted as a procedure manual which will help you along the way as well.
Below is a link to the one I drafted and submitted to my insurance company.
You will have to modify the draft according to the repairs done on your rig but at least it will be a guide for you to go by.
http://www.mbcforum.com/showtopic.php?tid/58406/
They actually called me back after receiving the draft and a portfolio informing me they had their appraiser look everything over and appraised the boat out at $30K.
Which means the FMV is probably more around the $35K,
Insurance companies always try to undervalue property when there butts are on the line.

Thank's crawfish, but I've never carried any hull coverage, just liability, and had to buy a blanket policy to get that.It may be different now, but back in 81 when you talked Hydrostream, and 240hp in the same sentence. All of the sudden nobody was in the insurance business.----And frankly an 81 viking total loss hull, would be in the $1500-2500 range with a $500 deductible so the payoff would not be much. That is good info though, for the guys that may be repairing a valuable hull. Here in Michigan, the only time you would need a survey,is when borrowing money on the boat 30 or more feet,or if it is a commercial use or charter boat.

That'll buff right out.
I'm on my way to get some snap style chain hooks for all my trailers.
The one time my coupler let go, (same story as yours) The trailer was properly balanced, and the close coupled safety chains cradled the tongue. Hit the next rough spot in the road while slowing down and hooked it with the tongue. Fuddled up the wimpy winch tower a bit, but no boat damage.
Since then, I've learned to be real anal about second walk around, proper safety chain length, and I also set up the electric trailer brakes so the lanyard will pull out before the safety chains get tight. That sets the trailer brakes and keeps the rig stretched out tight till it stops.
Still going for snap hooks.

X2,
Hell, I'm thinking about welding the boat trailer to the truck frame.
Hmmm, that may make turns a little complicated.
Had a 7' x 14' fully loaded enclosed trailer come loose on me once going over a set of train tracks and the dang thing ended up under my 4x4.
Had to jack the truck up to get it out from under.

Well it's been a long winter, work needed to come first,so the boat fix has been slow but constant. The top deck was removed, bottom and transom inspected, and hull repaired.John Spathe (Hydrostream of Canada) completed the new deck, and I made a dash to pick it up in March. The new deck is a little heavier than the old,but I'm thinking that's ok,most of the extra weight seems to be in the nose. And I've been known to run with a 17# bag of lead shot in the nose! Anyway,we bonded the deck on yesterday, and trimmed it out today.Tomorrow will get tabbed full circumference There was a LOT of work done that I did not get pictures of,was just to busy working.319871319872319873319874319875

I only have a block to tow the launch here, but I STILL take zero chances. Chains and double check! Heck, just sold a box trailer to a friend who lives 3 blocks from me. Said the hell with the chains leaving. I said no chains on, no go! Friend across the street does FG, and he spent a LONG time on a boat that left the ride on a off ramp and rolled 3 times down a hill. Plus another friend here with a Chris Craft had to take in to town for some work. Dragging it back on the freeway and got all the way here and I'm in back in the shop and hear a LOUD crash? Well, the latch was down, safety lock, BUT? IT was sitting on top the ball all the way! Hit the speed bump by me and trailer came off and hit the cradled chains, and if he would NOT have slammed on the brakes it would not have rode up his back end and punched a nice hole in his new SUV. Never get in a rush, and look it all over twice. Sorry to hear this, but wish the best outcome.

I think this now as you idiots (kidding :D). are putting some massive weight assend boats now and you REALLY should hit a truck scale just to see what the combo package weighs and adjust the trailer so the boat sits with at least 10% (15 better) weight on the hitch. None my trailered boats I can barely lift the "tongue", jack or crank swing down wheel.
Plus seen over the years people who do NOT know that hooking safety chains NEED TO BE CROSSED, so if chit happens, its a "cradle"..NOT straight in as "if" the boat comes off, the tongue will hit the pavement and if digs in? Oh boy, as "ya going for a ride ya wish never happened".
And on S hooks? ALWAYS NEVER "under hook", ALWAYS S hook DOWN! And I'm doing some new chains a boat I got and going Spring clips from now on. And don't go cheap either. Get the best, spend a few bucks and THINK? $50 in good chain and hooks could have saved that "beast". But seems its coming back to see "wet" again.
And ferchisakes when splashed? Remember that GD transom plug! (Been there, and done that too..DAMN, the one thing I forgot!).
And don't worry as "ya got good "Angels" watching over ya as the LAST thing I wanna see the Freeway in the cage and see a boat coming at me and NOT ON WATER?
I'm NOT a fan of the saying.."stay safe" BS, but more like "pay attention"! And can't stand the "news" talking heads saying .."it could have been worse" OFF COURSE.
But in your case?.............could have, but (like said ..yer "angels" went to work and saved yer ass as the boat" ;) Had some "divine spirit".. "take over me a few times on the bike when almost "losing it", but got away when doing "stupid" pushing the edge. You, like me, and the boat have them saying.."Dumbass, but hes OK so we will "let him live to see what next "dumb" as he's so "entertaining"! Wish the best dude..and "never give up" as "chit happens"
Still sad to hear but many MIGHT get a hint before it can happen to them too. And remember I'm 65 now, and don't even ASK some the dumbchit I did younger, but I survived "somehow"

The T3 -drag one is a Mike Nass item. The other is duplicates of early 2.4 offshore (1979) that I had made.I don't know of another source of these.I have a couple extra sets, for $100 shipped if anyone needs them.

Felt good.Moving the battery's under the seat box and the fuel foreword four feet,as well as going to a much lighter twin ram clamp, almost got rid of the Viking porpoise completley.I think it will take set earlier now.Time will tell.

Slimm,if you look at the pic that shows the gas tank. You will see the camera mounted just in front of the steering wheel. Not much to see during break in.But soon!
