Learning quickly the hard way....
I have a 2.5L Mercury Racing Offshore with stock lower unit.
During my last run I was at mid speed when 'bad noises' came from the back.. idled down and immediately power off and towed back to shore.
Found mostly water and silver oil in the lower unit. Turning the prop shaft is growls, but no free play. (arg, :nonod: my mistake for not inspecting more frequently!)

I am looking to get the lower end rebuilt.
I don't think this is something I want to tackle myself.
Looking for any recommendations on a shop up here in Ontario Canada that actually deals with this stuff frequently.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Paul.

Obviously not close to you but I HIGHLY recommend Lee Sanderson of Sanderson Marine in VA, I believe he advertises on here as well. If you don't have anyone closer that you trust which is asking a lot I guarantee he will do it right and be honest about what needs to be done.

For what it's worth he currently has 4 of my lowers.

B.O.A.T. That is too true!

After a quick look around online for prices, starting to think I may tackle the teardown and see what I am up against.

Is there any way to identify the lower unit to ensure I am getting the correct parts?
Is there a serial number marking on the inner case of the lower itself?

(I am fairly sure its a SportsMaster 4 hole low water pickup Right Hand Rotation)
