I was looking at the Skater site the other day. I guess if I won the lotto big, a 28 with 300XSs would look good.
Interesting stuff about splashes of their boats
"So successful was this hull in racing that the current 39 "Outerlimits" race boat is almost an exact duplicate of our 399 bottom and does not even remotely resemble any of their other hull designs"
"While other manufacturers, such as M.T.I. splash our hulls, here at Douglas Marine, all of our products are "original" designs, tooled and moulded at our factory. We are copied by some of our competition because our designs and tooling are superior to what they would produce on their own, and as our competition well knows, if it is a Skater, it is the best out there."

Be cool to know who hasn't copied Peters designs.
Redline out of Michigan didn't.
Who else?

Cosker and Callan started with a Tencara cat (later becoming Mystic Powerboats) and Victory does all of their hull design and build in-house (both brand of hulls sharing little similarities to Pete's hulls - even though Victory Team raceboats were Skaters for many years). It's common knowledge that Randy Scism worked for Pete for many years before going on his own and starting MTI - that is why they are very similar to Skater hulls. Outerlimits and Nor-Tech cats share little bottom similarities to Skaters, but they also don't work very well either. Randy at Nordic paid Pete for the rights to copy his 40 and 32B for Nordic's 43 and 34 cat, and Target up in Canada outright splashed a 32B for their 32. Jack Davidson at Sanger splashed a 32A, but I think he only ever built one. I heard a 388 Skater left Key West last year and was headed for Reggie's place for a splash. But I also heard Pete wasn't worried because Reggie would have to change a few things to feed his ego and would just f**k it up. Still haven't seen anything surface yet out of the Fountain cat camp. And of course on the small end you have Spectre, Motion, Lightning, Liberator and probably a few more that I'm missing all copied the 24/28/32A Skaters in one way or another. Trick and Extreme 21s don't really count as copies/splashes imo because Pete was already done building those boats (had even destroyed the molds) by the time these manufacturers came out with their identical-to-Skater-21 boats. And as stated above, Doug Wright has completely done his own thing with his very successful 32, as well as his other cats.

Dale, Great first hand info.... You forgot to mention who developed and tooled the Cigarette new step bottom...:D
I often wonder why Doug had to develop a cat....;):D
What I also find extremely funny and interesting is how many that have those so called splashes always say "it is like a Skater"....:smiletest:

There were a lot of big cats before there were skaters. Go back and look at any of the offshore races before 1984-Arneson and some of old school guys were running 40+ cats made out of 100% wood and or aluminum. Then in 1983 when Pete did the 24, (and made it light weight), it set the outboard world up for total amazement. He (Pete) has told me many times that those were some of his best memories and that the only reason he kept building bigger hulls was because he had customers that pushed him for a bigger and bigger boat.

I also have to image the profit margin is much greater on a 38 skater compared to a 28 skater. But I am sad the see the outboard skaters not getting much attention anymore.

The USA 39 ? Was what caused Arnows demise I believe ... He played both sides..., they were never a great boat.... He should of copied the Cougar, jaguars or CUV cats....they had some nice designs back in the 80's
I thought American Offshore copied the old 30 Chris Cat or maybe they bought the mold.

I agree with your post Joe. Guys nowadays don't realize that big cats were running race speeds of 130-150 a long time ago. And I agree that Pete always seems to be happiest talking about the achievements of his early boats. Don't leave out his 32As beating the world with Mike's small blocks in them! Those years are what really put Pete and Mike on the map!

I remember going to all the FL races and the 24' Skater class and then the 28's had some of the best racing around. Also the most boats in class.
Peter has built a company with a great reputation and the 388 might just be the all around best cat built to date.

Dale,
Funny you mention Mike, I was with him at the races last month and we were talking about the old days-His first big break was with the Don Q guys (Pete linked the deal for him) but they called him direct and asked for a couple sets of motors. Mike said he was so scared to say that he could do it, but he knew that he no choice other then to take on the order. He was working at Saleen as a young engineer (just a kid really), went to the mail box only a few days after the conversation with Don Q and opened up a check that was big enough to have bought him a new house at the time. He said he was shaking and had no idea what to do all of the money and no business account or anything else. He built the motors in his garage, put them in the back of his buddys truck, and would sneak in to Saleens shop at night to dyno them at night, go home shower and get back into work as if they had never been there.
You have to love will and determination-its all paid off now for both of them.

You need to go back even farther to the late sixty`s. I have seen a picture of a Ron Jones offshore tunnel that looks exactly like a Skater. The picture is dated 1968. I`ll see if i can get it posted.
