View Full Version : Using 1-piece adaptors with fishing motors??

Ok..I'm running stock 2.4L Merc powerheads mounted to high performance 1-piece exhaust adapters. At idle I have stalling problems which makes docking a bit tricky..not to mention at 18" centers I don't have alot of counter torque when placing one motor in forward and the other in reverse. I know that my motors are running cool all the time (I've read that the poppit valve does nothing when running 1-piece adapters with fishing motors) which most likely is the problem. What can be done to bring the motors up to temperature to prevent my stalling issues???

I've read on this site over and over and over that your combination is no problem, so it must be all in your head:rolleyes:
Now that we have established that you're crazy I feel as though we can create an effective dialog.
So..from one head case to another you need to slow the exit water to keep heat in the block. This will be a balancing act because as you slow exit water, pressure rises so you need to watch that as well.
How cold are these running, and are you sure you can't correct the condition with a little bump in idle timing?

close up the dumps holes in the plates and regulate off of the poppet dumps.

Ok..if I'm understanding this correctly, pull the power heads and block off the dump holes in the exhaust adapters..

Not completely.. Merc used 1 piece plates on 225 pro maxes with stats. I can't positively remember the size of the dump holes in those particular plates (19/64)?, but I'm sure someone will chime in and that is a good place to start. 848284t11 was the part# for the 225 pm 1 piece plate.

Capt, is correct 2-19/64 holes and work with poppet dump to tweak the rest. It is doable but it will take a bit of patience and tweaking. It should not take much work because you already run in warm waters.

have 3 of them here running for the past 4 years with no issues, i have them set up that they run around 120 deg. tony is right, and i also run tstats in them as well.

Here's the plugs that are in my 260 adaptor. We fiddled with a ton of dump restrictor sizes until we found one that works. Also have the 1/8 restrictors in the heads. I tried tstats but it ran cooler for some reason. (Never got above 110*)

how do you guys expect an engine to run a continuous temp with washers in the tstat housings? it works fine at wot, but what about idle(and everywhere else). i run 120 deg tstats, i think the app was 225x. when u plane off it needs to be up to temp, not just at wot. you need to establish the proper piston/wall clearance from the get go via temp, not just at wot either. the pair i have on a 24 skater now have 400 hours on them, with no issues.

I tried them and was surprised to see it run colder. During the winter I was running around 120-130* with the washers. The stats wouldn't get the needle over 100* and mileage sucked. This time of year I'm in the 140s with washers and 120s with stats. And yes it is around 100 or less with either one at idle.

one thing i did forget to mention is i drill a 1/16" hole in each tstat, not in the center but a lil off to the side. helps to bleed off air. i've always had good luck with them.
