View Full Version : Fountain 29' CC motor question
Hi all,
I have a '95 Fountain 29'cc.
I'm about to put twin 300 Yamaha HPDI's on it.
Anyone have any insight to this set-up?
Will the Yami's fit ok?
Any by feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think those motors will be way too heavy..
Too heavy ?
I thought they were around 540-550 each ?
merc 250xs are 505#
the boat originally has 225 Optimax's, didn't think the Yamahas would be that much heavier than the mercs
thanks for for the reply.
you might have to move your batteries forward, in the center console, and just make sure that they will turn left and right because it is tight the way they set inside the sides, but would be a interesting setup, sunsation has a 29cc with twin 300 vrods running near 80mph, good luck keep us posted

I added a OMC V-8 on mine and they are even on a bracket. No problem at all with weight.

No way they are to heavy. An extra 100lbs on the transom is nothing for a 30ft boat. Most boats that size have seats on the transom that add 500+ lbs to the transom with 3 people sitting in them.
Did you buy that boat from mill basin brooklyn? Is it missing the t-top?
Baja,
yes & yes. Do you know the boat ?
Know of any T-tops available?
From what I can find out, the Yam's are 20+ lbs heavier than the Optimax's it used to have. I don't think 40-50lbs more on the transom will be detrimental.
Thanks

True,
But a 29 fountain is more like a 26' boat:)

Yes I tried buying it but couldn't get her to budge. I didn't want to pay much because I would have to get it down here. Nice boat though.
Pasoso's put twin v8 on a 25 action. He will be fine ;)

Fast hull, but very weight sensitive, we had several of them sink at the dock with Optis due to water running back in the scuppers and into the bilge hatch. Move the batteries to the console one to compensate for extra weight, and two in case it does take on water, the batteries won't be submerged and short out.
What year is it? Around 02-03, Fountain started mounting engines on 24" centers, might need steering stoppers to keep the Yammies from hitting. I don't see any problem getting over 70 with the right setup, hull likes Bravos as well. They were good for 62 with 200 Optis.
Thanks for the reply Sundance.
The hull is a '95.
Should be be picking up the motors tomorrow, hope to be all set up and splash by end of July.

Sounds like a cool project, good luck with the boat. Let's see some pics of the build
Thanks Keith.
I'll post some up soon.
Sundance,
sent you an email/ pm from the THT site.
Bolted up motors yesterday, they're hitting the swim platform before they hit the stops on motor.
Wondering about correct engine height and best prop options

What steering are you running? Seastar is easy to limit so you don't crush a cowling

What are the center to center measurement? They look far apart to me....
Didn't hook up steering yet. The rams came with the motors, I think they're seastar. In a box in my van, I'll check again later.
That pic might be a little deceiving, they're closer together than it looks. I'll try to post a pic of the back of the boat. Not sure of center to center measurement, I'll try to get back to the boat this afternoon.

If Sea Star rams, install spacers on the shaft to limit hard over turning. They look like they're on 26" centers, which if you went narrower, you would need spacers either way to keep the inside of the cowlings from hitting hard over, so either way need some spacers...
Might have to replace the motor mounts.
Thoughts on solid mounts or stock rubber mounts ?
Finally got the boat in last Thursday for some testing.
Got out the boat up to 32-3400 when stbd motor started crappin out.
Boat was doing 47mph.
Waiting for mech to change high pressure fuel pump.
Can't wait to see what it will do at 6000rpm

Change vst filters first
Baja, did the vst & all the filters already. Mech thinks it's the high pressure fuel pump.
I have a spare kicking around, were gonna swap it out and see what happens. This motor was doing the same thing when I bought it. I thought going through the vst and changing all the filters would have fixed the issue ?
We'll see if swapping out the pump will do the trick.

Before you swap parts, get a fuel pressure gauge on it to see what the pressure actually is.
Swapped out the high pressure pump, no improvement.
Changed the 2 low pressure fuel pumps yesterday, seems to have fixed the issue.
Dropped it in yesterday to test it out, stbd motor runs fine but now the port motor doesn't want to turn over 4500rpm.
Ran nice at 43-4400rpms, 57.5 mph. With Mach Sterndriver 4blade 14.5x26

WHat will stbd motor turn now?
Have you had a vac gauge on the fuel line of port motor?
Did not put a vac gauge on fuel line, I do have vac guages on the filter housings mounted in boat. They're not showing anything though.
Niether motor wanted to turn over 4900 today, then port side didn't want to turn over 4400 again.
4900rpms was 64 or 67mph ( my buddy holding the handheld GPS can't remember which)
