Hey guys, great site you have here.

First off I'm going to apologize for the long post that is about to follow. Here goes

We just bought a 1988 Steiger Craft CC with a 1988 Mercury 200 on it. Not the original cowl, so I'm not sure if its a 200 or what? The previous owner says it was rebuilt 45hrs ago but who knows? The air box was removed as is the oil injection. We took it out when we first brought it home and it ran 48-51 turning 5100 55 degrees (2people and 3/4's of a tank of fuel). Does that sound right, is there more rpm left? Carbs are opening up all the way.

We've had it out a hand full of times fishing with no problems. The other night on our way back in, we were cruising 4200rpm 75 degrees(4 people and fishing gear) no problem when it cut out 2 times for a fraction of a sec and then ran fine the rest of the way in. When we got back to the dock we pulled the cowl to check if a plug wire had come off. They were all zip tied (6) but I did get zapped as soon as I touched them.

Had it out the other day after putting a new set of pugs in it and it seems like it has a miss 1500-2500 or so but has great throttle response out of the hole as well as mid range. When you shut it down and try to restart it sneezes sometimes and when it starts you need to advance the throttle a little otherwise it will stall, but will idle fine right after. Is that a carb or timing issue? Only other problem it has is after it goes into gear you have 2" were nothing happens when you advance the throttle (always did that).

Any leads as to where to start looking? I was going to get 6 coils and new wires for starters. Any other modifications or tricks or PM that these Mercs like or need? Velocity stacks, reeds ....

Thank you for any help in advance. Jerry

Leave it stock not enough gain to wory about on a heavy boat coils and wires are probly fine unless They are bad caroded get a spark board check for spark on all 6" then check compression if all that checks out your ahead of the game a good set of reeds will bring a old motor back up to par also

Does tha throttle/timin' arm move with it. Move tha controller, tha arm on tha motor should move at tha same time. If it doesn't ya got a cable or control box/hot foot (if its got one) problem. What rpm, in gear, does it idle at?

Well I found a couple of ripped boots for starters. Its turning 5x18 4 blade SS mirage and it idles around 450 in gear
Where would I find #'s to figure out which engine is this boat? The cowl says 2.5 Offshore Blackmax
